Book Description

3931702871 978-3931702878 September 1999 1
In the rivers and lakes of tropical South America lives a group of fishes that are more often associated with the sea - stingrays. Although in their natural habitat they are feared much more than the piranhas, on account of their dangerous poisonous spines, all over the world increasing numbers of enthusiastic aquarists are succumbing to the fascination of these unique creatures.

Dr Richard Ross, a scientist at the Santa Barbara Zoo in America, has for a long time been keeping these fishes in the display aquaria at the zoo, and here publishes the vast store of knowledge derived from this experience. The requirements of these rays, as regards successful maintenance and breeding, are revealed in detail for the first time in the literature. The reader will learn all about the requisite tank size, how to set up an aquarium for rays, the correct water parameters, and breeding. The successful diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect rays is also covered in detail. In addition the different species groups and their pecularities are discussed.

The extremely detailed text is illustrated with more than 80 unique photos, making this an indispensable book for anyone who wishes to know more about these interesting creatures or who is keeping - or planning to keep - stingrays in an aquarium.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ross does it again, July 17, 2000
This review is from: Freshwater Stingrays from South America (AQUALOG Special) (Hardcover)
Until Dr. Ross started publishing there was a serious shortage of information available for owners of freshwater stingrays. This book is great! It covers everything from the full grown size of South American rays to care of a ray and care of yourself if you get stung by your ray.

This book also helps dispel the myth that all rays are hard to care for. With clear, concise instructions on what a ray needs to thrive, this book should be the second that any ray enthusiast buys ("Freshwater Stingrays : Everything About Purchase, Care, Feeding, and Aquarium Design" by Ross is the first).

Buy these books BEFORE you buy a ray, if possible. Some rays get fairly big and it's good to know what you are getting yourself into.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for raykeepers, September 12, 2004
This review is from: Freshwater Stingrays from South America (AQUALOG Special) (Hardcover)
As with any Aqualog book this is a must have. I ordered this book as soon as I bought my stingray. If I had not , my ray would have died, as I was given poor information from the fish shop. This book gives much needed details about feeding, disease , tank size etc. Before buying a ray you really need to know what you are getting into. I spend $40 a month to feed one ray and he is quickly outgrowing a 125 gallon tank!
Aqualog books cost more than others but you TRULY get what you pay for.
