5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!
I have been an on and off "try to learn the guitar" player for about 15 years. I received the box set for xmas. I have learned more in one week than I have in the last 15 years. This is simply brilliant. Yes, you can find some CAGED theory on the internet for free... But I have yet to find any useful CAGED scale theory. This is unbelievable. I am more excited about...

If you are looking to learn to play the guitar through self-study, then BUY THIS BOOK - the whole series, for that matter. Your purchase will prove useful as the series contains good information and I believe his instructional method for guitar is quite sound and pragmatic. However, do not expect a polished product, by even the most minimal retail standard. Edwards may...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant!, January 2, 2006

I am more excited about playing my guitar than ever before. It is totally like the light going on. Wow. I can't believe the things I have learned in the last week using volume I alone. I used to avoid songs that were tabbed with a capo... no problem finding the chord somewhere else now. I used to attempt 3 chord theory with a few chords... now I can goof off in any key anywhere on the fretboard and add some soloing to it as well. Awesome. I would give it 6 stars if I could. I have purchased many guitar books and videos... this blows them all away. I can't imagine anyone choosing to teach guitar any other way after trying this. I would recommend guitar teachers to check this out. I now feel like I am only limited by my physical skills... no longer is there a creativity or an understanding road block. I may buy this book for all of my guitar buddies.
Book two connects book 1 in a music theory way and allows modifications of the book 1 patterns according to traditional music theory (minors, sevenths, different scales.. etc.). If you have some basic music theory knowledge, book one will keep you busy being creative for a long time. The DVD seems pretty good for the "too lazy to read" people. I did purchase the entire box set, but I received more than I expected just from book I alone.
Brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, June 11, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Fretboard Logic: The Reasoning Behind the Guitar's Unique Tuning (Plastic Comb)
I wish I had this book when I first got a guitar.

It took some work to get through, but things are finally making sense. He teaches you the basic building blocks that will free you from rote memorization of chords & scales. I am just digging into volume 2 and right out of the gate he is already decoding some mysterious concepts that have baffled me.

I could not recommend this book/series more highly!!

Edwards may rate an A as a guitar instructor, but he gets an F as an editor/publisher. The otherwise good pedagogical content is poorly organized/presented, and heavily peppered with off-topic digressions (many of which express significant negativity). From an editing/publishing standpoint, it is *really* awful. You will work very hard to wade through the organizational problems and distractions contained in this text, but the fundamentally good content will reward your efforts in the end if you have the determination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it's title implies ... a logical approach to learning the fretboard., August 19, 2005
This review is from: Fretboard Logic: The Reasoning Behind the Guitar's Unique Tuning (Plastic Comb)
Volume one of Fretboard Logic is a perfectly efficent and informative piece of work. It is a revelation. Some of the negative comments here suggest that the short volume is not thorough enough; I disagree. The first volume lays out the organization of the fretboard and deals only with that subject. It is purposely void of theory related material that could confuse the issue. Music theory applications are dealt with in the later volumes.

Give this a try ... it can change the way you play guitar.

Understanding the CAGED system will give you the tools for building an endless knowledge of the fretboard and music theory as it pertains specifically to guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most PRACTICAL and CONCISE instruction book yet!, October 18, 2001

This review is from: Fretboard Logic: The Reasoning Behind the Guitar's Unique Tuning (Plastic Comb)
I'd played a variety of styles for nearly 8 years and was relinquished to the 'brute force' memorization methods I'd been taught by instructors and books alike...until I picked up Fretboard Logic I upon a friend's recommendation. It should be the STANDARD INTRODUCTION TEXTBOOK FOR EVERY BEGINNING GUITARIST. But anyone who has not yet read this book may benefit from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fretboard Logic Series, February 11, 2000
This review is from: Fretboard Logic: The Reasoning Behind the Guitar's Unique Tuning (Plastic Comb)
Each book of the Fretboard Logic Series is a masterpiece on it's own merit. Together they become the most powerful tool for understanding the guitar I have ever found. I have been looking for something this concise since 1968 when I first started playing. God how I wish I had these books then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Systems analysis for the guitar, May 9, 2000

This review is from: Fretboard Logic: The Reasoning Behind the Guitar's Unique Tuning (Plastic Comb)
This book makes you feel very knowledgable about the guitar very fast. Gives you a logical system to cover the fretboard with chords and lead patterns. Ties the system back (briefly) into traditional music theory. Short, concise. I'm glad I bought it.

The reviews below all sound wonderful, even the ones that weren't five stars. Too good to be true I thought, so I only bought this one book rather than the box set. After a week of study, and occasionly rereading the same paragraph over and over until I got it, I too will say that this book did more for me in a week than all the decades of playing guitar and buying countless other books.

Still I was skeptical about the other volumes, so I decided that rather than buy the box set with the DVD I'd just buy the combination of Volumes I and II, and give Volume I to a friend. After spending some time with through Volume II, I realized I needed the DVD. Amazon just emailed today saying the box set of three volumes plus the DVD has just shipped.

Let me save you some time and money - buy the box set with the DVD. I say that without having seen the DVD, but from what I see with Volumes I and II, I think you're going to want to do that. Like everyone else, I only wish that I had discovered this book when I was a kid.

3.0 out of 5 stars good book if you want to understand the fretboard not music, June 8, 2003
This review is from: Fretboard Logic: The Reasoning Behind the Guitar's Unique Tuning (Plastic Comb)
I think this is a good book if you have prior experience and know some basics about music because this book will teach you nothing about playing songs or theory or anything like that.I teaches you more how the fretboard is set up in patterns which is pretty useful for people that already know a little about music theory.

Overall, I would say this book is for people with a little bit of musical knowledge and want to understand how the fretboard works hence the name fretboard logic.
