I built a jig that holds wide boards and has a sled that a router runs in to flatten wide boards. This bit worked perfectly. I have done four boards now with no slow down in cut quality.

This review is not a fair review as I have only used the bit once, but it perfromed flawless. I own several Freud router bits and I have full confindence that this will continue to perform with the same quality as my other bits. I wanted to be fair and up front, but with that said the wood that I normally used this bit on was white oak. The cuts were extremely smooth and within .002" of a 1/2". Please note that I was a machinist for years and I can't help but use my precision measuring tools. I do not believe that you will go wrong buying Freud bits.

The first thing that impresses you about this bit, is the size. It is really large. The cutters are huge and as such, require more care than usual, especially if you are using it in a hand held router.

I've been using the bit in a 2 1/4 HP router, with a D handle installed. I jointed and squared 2 large boards 8ft x 12" x 3", hand held. I butted the router base against long straight edges and took cuts of about 1/16" to 1/8". The bit performed flawlessly, giving me very smooth edges on the boards, which were laminated 3/4" cabinet grade plywood (3) with a 3/4" layer of solid red oak. Of course, the 2 1/2" cutting length wasn't long enough to do the whole board. After making about a 2 1/4" cut with this bit, I turned the boards over and used a 1/2" trim bit, bearing on the bottom, to finish off the cuts. The job turned out great, only requiring light passes with a smoothing plane to finish off the job. I'm very pleased with the speed and ease that this bit jointed and squared these large pieces. Nothing else in my shop worked as well or as quickly.

Now to the bad part. I got a little careless on the second board, while cutting one of the 8ft sides. I didn't keep the router dead flat on the surface and dipped into the cut. In a split second, that long cutter took a big bite out of the side and then climbed up and out of the cut, twisting me to the left. Fortunately, the D handle base is a very secure base, that allows you to have a very good hold on the router, so nothing happened other than scaring me half to death. But, if someone had been standing close to me on the left, the router would have been in their face in an instant. I've been using routers for over 30 years and never had a router do that to me before.

I like router bits that produce chips. This one does that. I don't like bits that burn when you stop for a moment--this one is pretty good about not burning too.

Be careful trying to remove this bit from the plastic casing it arrives in; it is very sharp.

If the bit is stuck in the casing, push it back and forth laterally until it is loose enough to slide out. If you twist it, twist in the direction of the blade, so that if you slip, you don't lose any fingers.

This bit makes quality dados and rabbets. The bit is sharp and seems to stay sharp through many cuts. Dado cuts are clean on the sides and in the bottom.

I do not have any complaint about this product.

I use this in my router table in similar fashion to a vertical jointer. It's razor sharp, and leaves a smooth satin finish on delicate pine. Would also be great for cutting deep rebates or tenons, although I have not done so yet with this bit, I'm certain it'd be up to the task. Another review mentioned using this in a handheld router... I wouldn't recommend that with any router bit over 3/4" in length or diameter for saftey's sake!

This bit cuts very well, I've tried a half inch craftsman bit with a quarter inch shank, and boy does this make a huge difference. I love freud, they make top notch products, unfortunately I can't afford to have a shop full of their products, but I have used their blades and bits on many occasions in other peoples shops and they are the best I've ever used!

Quality bit at good price. I use this bit on my router sled to level large projects that won't go through a planer. I leveled a 32 Sq Ft GluLam beam table top easily with this bit. It performed flawlessly over the entire project. Ensure your router accepts 1/2 inch shanks and has a speed adjustment so as not to exceed the 16,500 rpm maximum with this bit.
