The Freud shim set is precise, and is anodized with a dark material to prevent corrosion. There are four .004, two .008 two .012 and two .020 shims in the package. They seem flat and true. The only problem I have with this set is that they all look the same. Can you tell the difference between .008 and .012? I can.... with a micrometer. If you don't have one, you will have trouble telling the shims apart. There are some other sets that use color coding. These might be easier for some people to use. I like the fact that there are extra shims of each thickness (particularly the .004), since they could be damaged easily.

The shims are exactly what you would expect. I used a metal marking permanent marker (Sharpie Metal) to write each shim's thickness right onto the shim. Once that's done you are good to go and never have to measure again.

No trouble with warping as some customers reported earlier. I'm a bit of a novice, but have done other projects with more crude equipment. Much easier working witth this sort of precision equipment.

I did check other reviews of previous buyers, and was warned of rusty shims. Well, I gambled, and I lost. Most of the shims indeed had rust. I guess the company who makes and packaged this product figured they could save money by not spraying any oil on the shims, and then stored them in their damp basement. I am not impressed. Anyhow, use a rust removing spray like Rust Free, and spritz both sides of the individual shims. Wait a little while, wipe'm off real well, then spray them with a rust inhibitor like Boeshield T-9, and wipe clean again. They'll remained stained some, but the rust'll be gone, and they'll be protected.

The size is marked on each shim - looks like laser markings.
I recommend these to anyone needing some shims.

The listing says 10 shims in package but only 8 in package I rec'd.
ALL had rust and/or pits.
Tried 2 orders and both had the same exact results.
I use and am happpy with the results of the Freud Diablo 10" blades and the SD206 Dado blades but the shims that came with the dado blades rusted and pitted within 3 months and the replacements came that way.
Will look at the plastic or brass as replacements.
If I didn't have bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all.

I was surprised when I received these shims...they have
pitted rust on most of the shims. Not the quality I
expect from Freud. I guess you get what you pay for (cheap shims).
Atleast they should have coated the shims with a rust-preventative.
Even better..use stainless steel. I recommend an alternative shim set.

Freud SS100 Dado Shim SetThis product does what it says it does. Is it really necessary? Probably not. In order to size a dado precisely, you measure to approximate the set of dado blades used to the desired width. Then you start cutting test grooves in scrap stock and adding or change shim thicknesses and cutting another test. Depending on your skill and luck, you may get it right in several tries.
It is just as effective to select the dado blade set, with no shims, for a groove a little undersize. Then make a slight rabbet cut on the inserted board (shelf) to fit the dado, like fitting a tenon to a mortise. Use a piloted rabbet bit in a router to make the fitting cut. Once adjusted to depth, you can repeat the process accurately as many times as the project requires.

I bought the shim set because I thought I was missing something, but I probably will not use it much.

Received in a perfectly clean, brand new package. Three shims had rust spots the size of dimes. Both .020 shims were cupped as if they just came off a roller. This is Freud quality?
