Bersani focuses on key Freudian texts to argue that the nature of sexuality and the esthetic experience is masochism. He suggests that Freud's attempts to normalize sexuality's decentering and destabilizing elements so as to turn his observations into therapeutic tools create tensions and inconsistencies in his writingsa process of "theoretical collapse" that subverts Freud's stated goals while at the same time illustrating psychoanalytic authenticity and providing a perspective on "meaning and movement" in discourse that is useful for reading literature and analyzing art. Brief discussions of Assyrian bas reliefs, and of works of Beckett, Mallarme, James, and Pasolini suggest the themes and modes of such analysis. Bersani's fashionable deconstructive theorizing is crafty and more readable that the norm for this kind of work. Richard Kuczkowski, Dir., Continuing Education, Dominican Coll., Blauvelt,
