This review is from: Frezzato Sketchbooks (Maser) (Hardcover)
This book is a must for anyone who is a fan of Frezzato's 'The Keepers of the Maser' series published in Heavy Metal magazine. It shows how he comes about his ideas, and I'm sure you'd be able to get more out of it than I if you can read French. Example of it's excellence: The left page is his ROUGH page layout and the opposite page will be the final SKETCH before coloring and cleanup. Did I mention that this book is a BIG format? I hate books that are tiny. Oh, and it's a nice hardcover too at a decent price. EXCELLENT learning material for a comic hobbiest or a professional. It's stunning. This book is well worth the price and I say you should get it while you can and hide it from your friends, haha. The book is not just beautiful, it is educational because it gives us a glimpse into the process.

A technical genius of the graphic novel, frezzato brings a new and fresh style of sketch and pastel to his art work that has only been seen in other such comics as Books of Magic. His creative work is favorable and loveable and at some points very abstract, yet heartfelt. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in seeing the drawings behind the paint of Frezzato's beautifully rendered comics.

Many art books show you the finished product. However, if you really want to see the process in its early stages? Then getting this sketchbook is the way to go.
This sketchbook doesn't have any commentary. The author decided to for go the instructions and just gave you the art. Pencil, pen and shading to show you his mindset. You see how various characters in the comic are fleshed out. All this book has is picture after picture of art. Facial expressions, Robots, Vehicles and Rough drafts. This is a must have for anyone that wants to study a great artist. |
