Tuning in to God
In the introduction to his latest book, Friar Jack reviews methods the Holy Spirit uses to lead us into union with God. There are, of course, formal prayers like the Apostles' Creed and the rosary, which make up the bulk of Friar Jack's Favorite Prayers. There are also ways of praying such as inner quiet, listening, and silent union with God. Overall, Wintz sees praying as simply communicating with God. He uses the analogy of a poorly tuned radio to describe a common roadblock to prayer. "God is out there...but it's lost on us because we fail to tune in properly or open ourselves properly to God's loving presence," he writes. The book's 15 chapters give us a model for "tuning in."

Most of the chapters are devoted to specific written prayers. In these Wintz offers a short reflection, then breaks down the prayer into sections followed by comments, often enriched by scripture passages and sometimes Friar Jack's own prayer. Five of the chapters address Franciscan spirituality with familiar prayers of St. Francis and St. Clare as well as one explaining the Franciscan Coat of Arms. Wintz also includes a chapter on the way of the cross and a meditation on St. Anthony and the Child Jesus.

This is a clearly written, insightful book suitable for individuals wishing to enliven their prayer life. It is also a good resource for retreat leaders, catechists, and faith sharing groups.

you can sit in mass for decades and still not understand the how and why of the meaning of the prayers - this book breaks it down line by line. it is insightful and indeed allows for less hum drum repetition and more heartfelt meaning
