Book Description

April 30, 2010
When Frida Kahlo died in 1954, her husband Diego Rivera asked the poet Carlos Pellicer to turn her family home, the fabled Blue House, into a museum. Pellicer selected some paintings, drawings, photographs, books and ceramics, maintaining the space just as Kahlo and Rivera had arranged it to live and work in. The rest of the objects, clothing, documents, drawings and letters, as well as over 6,000 photographs collected by Kahlo over the course of her life, were put away in bathrooms that had been converted into storerooms. This incredible trove remained hidden for more than half a century, until, just a few years ago, these storerooms and wardrobes were opened up. Kahlo's photograph collection was a major revelation among these finds, a testimony to the tastes and interests of the famous couple, not only through the images themselves but also through the telling annotations inscribed upon them. Photography had always been a part of Kahlo's life-her father Guillermo Kahlo was one of the great Mexican photographers at the beginning of the twentieth century-and her collection constitutes a roll call of great photographers: Man Ray, Brassai, Martin Munkacsi, Pierre Verger, George Hurrel, Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Manuel and Lola Alvarez Bravo, Gisele Freund and many others, including Kahlo herself. It is likely that many of the unattributed photographs in the collection were taken by her, though we can only be sure of the few that she decided to sign in 1929. Frida Kahlo: Her Photos allows us to speculate about Kahlo's and Rivera's likes and dislikes, and to document their family origins; it supplies a thrilling and hugely significant addition to our knowledge of Kahlo's life and work.

I borrowed this book from the local college library to check it out. I find it a great book of photos -black and white and sepia . Along with written articles before each section. 401 photographs. I am ordering my copy today.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Frida Kahlo you will love this book February 5, 2013
The photographs in this high quality book give new insight into Frida Kahlo's life and times. Black and white, sepia and gray photographs abound. We see Frida, her family, her friends, the home she loved, the places she visited and animals she adored. It's truly wonderful book. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars So many photos December 24, 2012

Seems like hundreds of pictures, almost all are interesting and historically meaningful. I felt like I got into Kahlo's basement, stumbled on a box of old photos, and made off with it. It seems more like a stack of family photos than professional shots until you get into it and find photos by Madotti, Weston, Man Ray and the like. And the photos themselves include eeverything from family snapshots, to Christmas cards, to formal pictures of statesmen. From pictures of Madotti and Weston to Trotsky, to Rivera and Kahlo (of course), to the unknown (including a murdered striker). Read a biography of Frida Kahlo and most of the characters will be found in photos in this book. It's well worth the trip if you like photography, history (of that time), Kahlo/Rivera, and art.

3.0 out of 5 stars Must have for Fridaphiles! February 24, 2012

This is a gorgeous book.

The publisher used the best, thickest paper; it is luxuriant and heavy (this is one HEAVY book) and offers the best possibility for viewing Frida Kahlo's wealth of a photographic collection.

And yet, for the size and scope, and I realize that the impossibility of what one actually wants and what was there available to make the book possible are two different things, I waas expecting... more Frida!

A very good side effect is the reproduction of the verso of many of the photos, where Kahlo has annotated them, often adding interesting tidbits of information.

If like me, you are a Fridaphile, then buy this book.
