The Cure creates a gorgeous pop standard,

This review is from: Friday I'm In Love ( LP Version ) (MP3 Download)
The Cure was a band known for its dark and tormented wailing that was a precursor to "Goth", but this is a lovely pop love-song to the happiest day of the week, Friday. This was actually a happy accident for the band; when they recorded the song it was supposed to be in a much slower tempo, but Robert Smith was fooling around with the speed control on the tape recorder and the resulting tempo was much faster, and therefore much more upbeat, than the Cure's usual efforts. The lyrics are still about three-fourths dismal with Monday falling apart and Thursday watching the walls, but Friday manages to pull off the one-in-seven chance to redeem the whole song. The result is sweetness with a touch of melancholy, but no saccharine. As such, it's a bit out of the Cure's usual passion for dirges about spiders and darkness, but arguably their most popular song to date. The band plays the song in the slower original tempo on live recordings. |
