Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 2—On Saturday a boy discovers his father's old Radio Flyer in the attic. As the week progresses, he thinks of flying and builds wings for the wagon, which break off when he tries to take off on a wooden ramp. His father is a continual presence—pulling him in the wagon, working beside him in the garage, running to see about him when he crashes, and, finally, sharing his flight of imagination. Subtle alliteration moves the story through the week, as in "Wednesday was wet./We had to wait." Full-color spreads are oversize and beautifully done in oil paints. Still, they scarcely contain Pullen's powerful images of a young boy working out his dream of flying. The boy's head is large, his face is expressive, and he bears an unmistakable resemblance to his dad. The final spread—father and son together in the Radio Flyer, their eyes closed, their arms outstretched, their bodies tilted as if in flight—is take-your-breath-away wonderful. This is a strong first purchase, affirming the bond between boys and their fathers as well as the power of imagination.—Mary Jean Smith, Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN

One Saturday a boy and his dad were up in the attic looking around. There was all kinds of junk up there. There was a box labeled costumes and another one labeled baby clothes. Over there he could see a hat, an ancient suitcase and a bicycle. Not very interesting things to look at, let alone play with. Oh, wait a minute there was his "dad's old Radio Flyer." On Sunday his dad took him for a ride in it and when they were out he glanced up at a biplane in the sky.

By Monday he had his pilot's gear on his head and a cape over his shoulders and later that night he was thinking that "maybe that old Flyer could really move." He tinkered with it all the next day and by the evening it was really looking like a plane, but of course it rained on Wednesday and he wouldn't be able to fly it. Thursday every attempt ended in "tumble after tumble," but Friday was another day. Could an old Radio Flyer really fly?

This is a very imaginative and fun story of a boy with a big imagination and knack for tinkering that made his dream come true. The text is minimal with only a word or sentence on each page, but the magnificent illustrations make this a highly visual read. If you're still missing your old Radio Flyer and would like to share your love for it, simply grab a copy of this book, dream and read away to yet another generation of Radio Flyer lovers!

I am very picky about the books I read to my boys and especially what we add to our collection. We checked this book out at the library and I just had to purchase it. This is one of my all- time favourite books for the following reasons:

1. The pictures! They are beautiful and descriptive.
2. The words are concise, yet poetic, with Pullen's use of alliteration. Also, he uses the days of the week (sneak a little bit of teaching in there!)
3. The story is short and I enjoy having some books around that are a quick read (especially at bedtime when it's late). At the same time each page is fulfilling- it's like leaving a movie theater after watching a "feel good" movie.
4. The book teaches children to use their imaginations.
5. It depicts a sweet father/son relationship.
6. Unlike so many books there is nothing negative in this book to teach my boys.

This book is a wonderful glimpse into the simple pleasures of being a little boy. I can't believe this book doesn't have way more reviews. This is really one to own!

Our prissy little granddaughter loves this book! When it came in and I saw the illustrations, I did not expect her to like it. Seems like it would appeal to a boy more--but she enjoys books. This one is a winner, especially when given with a real Radio Flyer!

Purchase for the illustrations. The story is thin and needs to be filled with the kids imagination and studying the pics.

I bought my grandson a Radio Flyer wagon for his birthday and thought this book would be the perfect book to go with the wagon. The wagon was a big hit but the book was a real disappointment. I usually like children's books that have good rhyming and/or a good story, preferably with a positive message. This book had neither a plot/story and no rhyming. In fact it is the worst book I have bought my grandson so far. I may rip a page out and frame it to hang in his room and throw the book away. Don't waste your money on this one.

I love this book. I purchased for my grandson to go along with his Radio Flyer wagon I bought him. The book is large, well made and has the most amazing illustrations.
