Editorial Reviews

From the Artist

"Friday at Five" was originally intended to be a demo project as well as an opportunity to reunite with some old Santa Cruz friends now professional musicians in New York City. Magical things can happen when the right musicians are brought together under the right circumstances. Donny McCaslin and John Dryden as well as Tony Mason, John Bailey, and Andy Hess are those musicians. "Friday at Five" was recorded in a studio in Manhattan in 1997. To create more of a "live" feel, no sound barriers were used to separate the musicians, much like recording sessions of years past. This "demo project" was finished in two days and somehow ended up in storage. Eight years later, to my amazement the music remains as fresh as the day it was recorded in 1997. This enduring vitality is the essence of "Friday at Five".

Product Description

“Magical things can happen when the right musicians are brought together under the right circumstances,” Kenny proclaims. Donny McCaslin and John Dryden as well as Tony Mason, John Bailey, and Andy Hess are those musicians Kenny is referring to. “Friday at Five” was recorded in a small studio in Manhattan in 1997. To create more of a “live” feel, no sound barriers were used to separate the musicians, much like recording sessions of years past. This “demo project” was finished in two days and somehow ended up in storage. Eight years later, Kenny’s music remains as fresh as the day it was recorded in 1997. This enduring vitality is the essence of Kenny Carr’s debut album “Friday at Five”.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Genious" knows how to pick 'em!, September 11, 2005

This review is from: Friday at Five (Audio CD)
Carr was the lead guitarist for the late, great musical genius, Ray Charles and went on tour with his orchestra during the last 10 years of his life. He also worked with another great Jazz Guitarist, the late Ray Brown. It's easy to see why Charles selected Carr. He has an exciting guitar style that's similar to another great guitarist, Larry Carlton. There's allot of energy in his playing. It seems like he's having fun and he wants us to enjoy his playing as well. The tracks New York Shuffle and Gramercy Groove are evident of his years of experience. My personal favorite track on the CD is "Coast to Coast". His debut, CD is a collection of blues and jazz tracks that will satisfy the lively listener as well as the relaxed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toe-tappin' jazz!, August 26, 2011

I love this debut CD from a guitarist I've watched play live a number of times at Ray Charles concerts when the master was still alive. There is very little weakness here; all the tracks reward a close listen. A couple of the songs -- all originals -- are pure genius. I have "Friday at Five" and "Exit" as power songs on my ipod, they really get me running! The tone of Carr's guitar is pure, much like early Benson. Through the fuzz box you get a strong rock vibe that really grooves. All good stuff. Highly recommended!
