Since realizing how inefficient my central unit was, I have saved a lot of money using window units. Because I have a few different makes and brands, I thought it would be useful to compare the three newest: Frigidaire FFRL0633Q1, Friedrich CP05G10A, and the higher BTU Friedrich CP08G10A.

BUILD

All three models feel fairly heavy duty and are made of durable materials. The cheapest construction is the CP05G10A, which has a flakier cabinet and is prone to vibration sounds if it isn't set up right. It is more reminiscent of a cheap GE unit that I bought locally, despite costing substantially more. The CP08G10A seems to have been made by a completely different company and is very sturdy. The Frigidaire is somewhere inbetween, with a bit more fragile materials, but still substantial.

APPEARANCE

One of the main reasons to choose central air over a window unit is because window units are ugly and block part of the window. Still, there is a pretty broad range of styles. Of the three, and of all that I've used, there is a clear beauty queen: the FFRL0633Q1. Frigidaire took an original approach to the design and created something relatively streamlined and sleek. The short-and-wide style might also fit in more windows.

The CP05G10A is an old fashioned design in every way, from the control panel to the beige color. It looks old out of the box. The CP08G10A has a very different design, which includes a nice white finish and relatively stylish panel. Again, it is like the two units come from different companies.

INSTALLATION

You know the drill: add the foam, stick on the accordion fins, and shove it in the window. Well, something like that at least.

My three year old cp08G10 was incredibly quiet. Not so with this brand new AC. The AC vibrates, causing the plastic grille to vibrate. Way too noisy to sleep. Got five hours sleep last night since as soon as I turned on the AC, I could not sleep. Will contact Friedrich tomorrow and update on their response. My Super tells me someone else in my building has exactly the same problem with this AC.

For those of you who owed this AC from three years ago there are a couple of very unfortunate design changes:
1) The machine starts in Money Saver and you have to switch it to cool.
2) The window on the grille door does not show the mode, so at night, from bed, you can't tell whether or not you are on cool. All the more irritating because the AC starts in Money Saver (which is impossible for me to sleep with).

The machine is not well made, so I think it is just luck of the draw whether you get a "lemon" like the one I am criticizing or a nice quiet AC (like the old days when Panasonic made this AC).

Hoping Friedrich just authorizes a replacement since I know from a past experience with a noisy Friedrich 10,000 btu that the noise problem cannot be solved by repairman. Some machines are good, others dreadful.

I had high hopes for this air conditioner. But I tried two samples and both made bad sounds. I ended up returning them.

Pros
- Build quality and parts seemed ok. (Though I am hardly an expert on a/c units.) The packaging however was sub-par. With both units the boxes arrived trashed and the A/C's took minor dings as a result.
- No problems with the installation.
- Looks nice and has usable controls.

Cons
- Each unit made a distinctive sound. The first squeaked. Probably caused by the squirrel cage fan rubbing against the Styrofoam insulation. The second vibrated and made a distinct growling sound when the compressor kicked in. It sounded like a cranking of a V8 car engine when the car won't start.

In both cases I could have lived with it in the living room or kitchen, but in my bedroom the noise left me staring at the ceiling.

Be Aware Very loud! And very heavy vibration when Compressor kicks on.........As an example when this unit was on we could clearly hear it in the kitchen downstairs and halfway across our home.

Called Friedrich Tech/Customer Support today and they recommended we return the unit as seemed defective because of vibration and loudness but the Agent from Friedrich tried to gently tell us these "CP" units are lower end line for Friedrich and as such louder and less substantial then higher price units.

DO Not buy this for a bedroom unless your a heavy sleeper and like loud noise!

Cools great and quietly. The appearance is very good quality also.
The black guides to attach the side fins was a bit confusing from the manual, but I called Friedrich and they
sent me some pictures to clarify how to install them.

For my situation the install was easier since I have sturdy storm windows so I did not need the extra support
hardware.

One tip for those installing. Make sure you flip the black plastic vent control lever down before you put the front
grill cover on since it's tricky to do so afterwards.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I purchased last year's model of this same air conditioner last summer and learned a very important lesson; always test the unit before installing. This A/C is designed with a slide out chassis and is a two part installation, the frame and then the A/C.

We ran into a challenge installing the frame because we don't leave our A/C in year round and we have an aluminum storm window frame that has to remain in place. So we had to raise the sill level with a piece of wood and drill a new hole to move the included bottom braces so they would fit behind the storm window frame.
After going through all that we plugged it in and the fan made an loud awful noise like it was hitting something and then it wouldn't even turn at all. That unit was returned to Amazon and because we needed A/C right away we bought an inexpensive GE unit locally instead. The GE was so loud I barely got any sleep the rest of the summer and even the cat wouldn't sleep in the bedroom anymore.

Because I couldn't bear the thought of another summer with the GE I was happy to have the opportunity to try the Friedrich again. I like the slide out chassis because there is no chance of losing your grip and dropping the A/C from the second floor while trying to balance it in the window while closing the sash on it. It also came in handy when we discovered a bird had started a nest under it and we were able to easily remove just the A/C to clean out the nest.

Some annoyances with the Friedrich
The frame has a nice think coat of paint on it, great for durability but when they sized the hardware they don't take into account the smaller opening. We had to tap all the screw holes and the plastic bottom guides for curtain were almost impossible to snap in.
