3.0 out of 5 stars The best sound - but much missing, May 30, 2006

This review is from: Friedrich Schorr Sings Wagner (Audio CD)
I have admired Schorr's Hans Sachs since I first heard these excerpts in the 60's. His was THE voice for the role, and both musically and interpretively, he remains the greatest Sachs on record - once you have heard it, it becomes part of you.

This is the best re-mastering of these excerpts that I have heard: clean, mellow, immediate. Unfortunately, much is missing from Schorr's Meistersinger legacy in order to make room for the Walkure and Dutchman excerpts. A great pity: two discs were really called for.

For the complete Schorr Sachs, go to Pearl; slightly harsh - but everything he did in the studio is there (there are at least two "complete" live Meistersingers to be found, with old-fashioned cuts, and a very distant "chunks" set from Berlin which is better avoided: go for the Guild Metropolitan set).

A good set then, for an intro to this wonderful singer, but more of a tour through his big roles than a spotlight on his warm, subtle and infinitely well-voiced Sachs.

If only Ward Marston and Naxos would give us a Schorr Meistersinger!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Wagner Voice, February 25, 2011

This review is from: Friedrich Schorr Sings Wagner (Audio CD)
It's not hard to understand Schorr's reputation based on this recording, but we have become accustomed to darker and deeper voices in this music. The extract from the Dutchman is beautifully sung but I prefer the colour of a Norman Baillie or George London, even if they don't match the artistry. My Wotan track has a glitch in the middle that I have to FF over but I still find it very engaging. It's the Sachs you would want this for. He's the perfect Sachs in every respect, and there is a lot of extracts on the disc. Schorr is somebody Wagnerians should here.
