My favorite book, from my favorite teacher.,
By A Customer
This review is from: My Friend the Dog (Hardcover)
Miss Machek was back! My favorite teacher, from the third grade, would be teaching sixth grade! I was happy, dedicated and conscientious. I led the class in book reports. Come spring, 1946, Miss Machek gave me my reward, wrapped in plain brown paper. I couldn't wait until I arrived home to open it. It was, of course, a book -- ''My Friend the Dog'' by Albert Payson Terhune. I read it. I rearead it, and then started over once more. I grew to love dogs, especially collies. The stories in this anthology were fresh to me, perhaps trite in the realm of great literature but no geat work could ever mean so much. Terhune captured the heart of the dog. He captured my heart, too. Miss Machek always had my heart. Somewhere between high school and the working world, the dog-eared (Freudian pun) book was lost. Now I have the opportunity to read the reprint and go back to those precious years. I shall have to pay for it myself this time, of course. But it will always be a gift from Miss Machek

Excellent Terhune Stories!,
By Books-n-Collies (Midwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Friend the Dog (Hardcover)
There are 12 chapters of some of the most beautiful, glorious, sad and heroic dog stories Albert Payson Terhune ever wrote. I don't want to give the stories and plots away so I won't go into great detail. However, these stories are each a classic in themselves. I enjoyed each one greatly and loved every hour I spent reading this great book! As excellent as these 12 chapters were, I enjoyed the 13th chapter even more. Entitled THE DOGS OF SUNNYBANK, this chapter is precisely that. Read about Argus, Terhune's first collie. Learn about his first litter of collies, how he began to breed collies searching for another Lad and Bruce amongst them. You will learn about Treve, Bobby, Wolf, Bunty, Lady, and others in a fun and happy sequence of events that will leave you smiling. What fun it must have been at Sunnybank with all those collies and their individual personalities and unique hilarious antics. This book is a must have for those who love dog stories, Terhune fans and especially for those who love collies. 5 Stars!
