I read "A Friend in Grief: Simple Ways to Help" before giving it to a friend whose son died recently. Having lost both parents and a brother, I was acquainted with the grieving process and felt I fairly understood how to be supportive to others. "A Friend in Grief" provided direction in ways I never could have articulated.

This book is a must-read for everyone who knows someone experiencing bereavement. At some point in time, that's pretty much every human being. It should be on every therapist's and religious counselor's bookcase, and be available in every library, book store, hospital gift shop, nursing home, support group, hospice, and funeral home. It really is that helpful.

Ms. Callaway gives sound advice on what to do and say (and equally crucial, what not to say) to those who are grieving. This is a guidebook full of meaningful gestures--large and small--illustrating how to be a supportive friend, family member, neighbor, or co-worker to the bereaved. The book unfolds in a logical sequence, yet skipping ahead to read one particular chapter, say, 'Caring from a Distance', will provide just the right level of guidance for the moment. But this is also a book for those who are grieving, as it provides insight into behaviors that seem perplexing or feel hurtful to the bereaved.

Our society has no compunction about broadcasting all manner of intimacies (most of which expose far Too Much Information), but when it comes to death, we're dumbstruck. Yet death is the conclusion to the cycle of every life. We desperately need to be educated about it so we can be better equipped to comfort and be comforted. "A Friend in Grief" takes us by the hand and gently leads us away from our fears.

I teach psychology at a university. A student walked into my office this morning and wanted to know how he could help his best friend deal with the death of his brother. The student felt awkward talking about this topic with his friend, but he just did not know what to say to him.

I suggested that he read Ginny Callaway's book and I showed him the link. He was so thankful to finally have a book he could turn to. This book is amazing.

Ginny Callaway's remarkable, and remarkably comforting, advice on what to say to friends and family at the loss of a loved one, is more than a self-help book. It's as though another friend has come by to hold your hand - I highly recommend this book.

After much procrastinating, I ordered this book a few months ago. I knew I would need it at some point, and I can not emphasize what a help it has been to me. When all of the "What do I do? What do I say?" questions arose after a death, I usually just didn't know, and the author's experience, and sharing it with us, has given me a direction, and helped me do something, anything, however small. This book helped me understand that I should not be afraid and shy about approaching friends in grief, but to reach out, pitch in, help, pick up the phone - just be present and be helpful in the lives of those who have experienced a death and are grieving. Highly recommended.
