Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3– Characters with disabilities are seen through the eyes of their friends, who relate how they behave and how they may seem impolite or distracted, or cause trouble in school. Robby has ADHD, but he's enjoyable to be around because he loves basketball and likes to try new things. Zack has autism, but his love of airplanes makes him a knowledgeable and fun friend. The message is that patience and understanding are the keys to being a good friend, especially to someone with chronic health problems or difficulties relating to others. Back matter offers a more detailed explanation of the disabilities and Did You Know? fact boxes appear on every page. Full-page, colorful illustrations depict multicultural children at home, school, and play. Engaging and empathetic, this set deserves a place on library shelves.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Deborah Sandford on December 28, 2011
Format: Paperback
Marcus introduces himself and his friend Robby. "Robby has ADHD, which stands for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder." Each two page spread has a simple yet effective explanation of ADHD which a child can understand, as well as an attractive sidebar ("Did You Know?") which enhances the conversational information. The illustrations are large and engaging, making it a good choice for a read aloud. An informative addendum (What is ADHD?), as well as an index, glossary and bibliography make this an excellent choice for a lower elementary book or research report. I read this book to my son who has ADHD. This book helped open a discussion between my son and I about his ADHD and it also normalized the behavior.

My son loved reading this story with me. He kept saying "Just like me" when he heard about the things that Robbie would do. I think it affirmed for him that other people have similar experiences like his and that he does not have to feel so isolated from his peers when he is having a tough day.
