Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1. A curious hen views the world from her farmyard perspective, missing all of the clues that her humans have a new baby. A silly sit-com for the youngest set.

From Booklist

Ages 3^-6. After noticing a fancy new wheelbarrow (actually a baby buggy) parked in the yard, hen Minerva Louise wanders into a nearby house. When she spots a rabbit hutch (crib) inside, she concludes that a new bunny must be around, but she can't find it under the workbench (changing table) or in the cozy little nest (diaper bag). Wandering back outside, she sees the farmers (parents) pushing the wheelbarrow. Still hoping to find the bunny, she peers inside the wheelbarrow, totally ignoring the live infant to rejoice at the sight of the stuffed bunny the child holds in its arms. The appealing illustrations parade snow white Minerva Louise through a series of scenes filled with bright, familiar objects that children will instantly recognize, allowing them to be a step ahead of Minerva and in on the joke. Like the daffy hen's three previous adventures, this one will be great for group fun and a popular storytime choice. Lauren Peterson

5.0 out of 5 stars minerva louise is hilarious, February 1, 2011
My kids LOVE the goofy adventures of Minerva Louise. She's like the character Rose from the Golden Girls in the body of a hen. Here she misunderstands the evidence of a new baby in the house to hilarious effect. Totally giggle-worthy.

My five year old brought this book home in his nightly reading bag yesterday. We read it no less than three times and then he read it some more to himself after I put him to bed. It's a great book with well-drawn pictures and a funny story. The last page had us rolling. Now I see that there are other Minerva Louise books out there! We can't wait to read them!

Have read this book to my students and they LOVE Minerva Louise. She is so much like a real child it is uncanny. A must for any child's reading library.
