This book is a guide to help people strengthen healthy eating attitudes, reduce compulsive overeating, and eliminate weight cycling. The book is based on specialized treatment interventions for anorexia and bulimia but is primarily geared toward obese and overweight people. Part I addreses the physiological triggers of weight cycling and compulsive overeating. Part II addresses the hidden evils of weight control such as perfectionism, co-dependency, and relationships which can sabotage weight control efforts. Part III contains biographies from patients who have completed this program and thier expereince in society as an obese child and adult. As readers progress through the book, they are provided with free online supprt at www.friendlymirrors.com. Online services include 24-hour webmail, weekly Q & A chats with the author, and posted lectures and chat transcripts.

About the Author

Dr. Scarano-Osika has been chariperson for the non-profit associations called the Capital Region Association for Eating Disorders, a non-profit organization that provides support groups, information, and referral service for those with an eating disorder and/or their significant others. Eating disturbances are becomming more and more prominent and Dr. Osika specializes in providing very specialized services to adults and teens with anorexia, bulimia, and other subclinical eating distrubances. Her training at The University of Rochester School of Medicine-Strong Memorial Hospital provided her with skills in brief goal oriented treatment, which runs counter to the perception of psychiatry as a "soft science". Her book is based in recent medical research from the medical field, endocrinology, and psychiatry.
