Friendly Robotics RL500 Robot Mower

After my first daughter was born, and seeing how easily my husband gets sun burned, I have decided that mowing by ourselves is not the best way to take care of our lawn. So, when I was pregnant with my second child in 2002, I went on ebay and bought this RL500 and put it into use that summer. We paid a little over $300 for it.

It was a great time saver. The perimeter wires are easy to lay down and will disappear once the grass grows over it. After that, all you do is charge the battery and then run the mower when needed. My best moments in summer are when we can do things inside the house or just relax when this little machine is working hard under the sun (or moon if necessary). Very quiet. Our lot is not too small (a little over half an acre), so it takes two rounds for the front and another two for the back to get a very nice and even cut. One round each would suffice if you don't mind the 1-2% of the area that gets left out.

Nowadays, we just go back home from work and send the robomower out into the turf while we prepare dinner and eat. We bring the robomower back in after about 2 hours, or when the kids are put in bed. It usually recharges in about 24 hours with the standard charger. For the strip of grass next to the street, we manually cut it. Every 3 weeks or so we have someone come in and do a cutting and edging for us, but in between those three weeks, the robomower does a wonderful job.

This is the robomower's 3rd summer. The money we saved (from hiring outside help) has more than paid for the machine. I'm very happy about it. I would be even happier if the battery charges a bit faster, but 24 hours is good enough for our requirements.
