Most Helpful Customer Reviews

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful By Kevin R. C. Gutzman on March 6, 2010
Format: Hardcover
Laymen and judges often begin and end their search for the original understanding of the Constitution by leafing through a handy edition of The Federalist. Yet, despite its authors' later eminence, The Federalist had scant influence on the debate over ratification. It did very little to shape original understanding.

Where ought one to begin, then? With this volume. Here we find Framer and future Supreme Court justice James Wilson's speech at the Pennsylvania statehouse, which was more widely published and discussed during the ratification contest than any other other argument in favor of the Constitution. Here we find Framer and future US senator and Supreme Court justice Oliver Ellsworth's scathing attacks on ratification's opponents -- again, far more influential at the time than The Federalist. And so on.

John Kaminski and his team in Wisconsin have for years been at work on over two dozen volumes of speeches, letters, editorials, and other pertinent material contemporary to the ratification dispute. If you don't have time or inclination to dive into The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution, there is no better place to start to learn about what the People thought they were doing when they ratified the Constitution than this volume. (Plus, it's very inexpensive.)
