Scary book,
By Antonio's Mama (Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Friends Go Adventuring (School & Library Binding)
The illustrator is very talented with watercolors, and I thought the story was fine until the page in which the cat was making mouse traps using a guillotine, a noose, spikes, etc. The friends go on to meet geese that are held captive (about to become slaves), sword wielding pirates, and a freaky chef cannibal with a huge knife - do I really want to explain slavery or cannibalism to my little boy? Lots of violent images. No thanks. The cannibal image is enough to fuel nightmares for anyone, not just a child.

I read this book to my daughter one evening and we giggled together for the longest time. It is a very cute story about the friendship of a rooster, pig and mouse, and Helme Heine's illustrations are just whimsical and silly and fun. He is a master of subtlety in the characters' facial expressions and gestures, has a great eye for unique perspectives and angles, and the gentle tones of the watercolors complement the text beautifully. This can be said not only of this book, but of everything by Helme Heine. I highly recommend Mollywoop and Friends, which are two of his other books that feature these same lovable characters, but don't stop there. I have yet to read one of his books that wasn't a first-rate work of art.

When my daughter and I read Friends, which also written and illustrated by Helme Heine, she really likes this book. She asked me to read it again, and again. She likes Johnny mouse, fat Percy and Charlie rooster who are good friends and do anything together. The text is simple but kids like those adventures. The pictures are also colorful and attractive. Now she had the second book about the three friends' adventures. She is really enjoy listening the story and seeing the pictures. Let her imagine she goes adventuring with Johnny,Percy and Charlie.
