From the Author

Bo and Rico are characters that first appeared in my book "Welcome Home".  I felt that these characters deserved a book of their own.  "Friends for Life" is the story of how they meet and become the streetwise dogs that later help Jake, the lead character in "Welcome Home", search for his dream home.

Friends for Life may be a children/teen book but any true dog lover will fall in love with Rico and Bo and their mentor Tank. The book formed pictures in my mind of the dogs as they grew and lived their lives. I could hear the doggy voices just from the words Billi used to describe the dogs. The story is a glove on a cold day..sun after the rain...a soft pillow after work. It made me smile and laugh and cry. I am 49 and am an avid book reader. This is one i will never forget . All my dogs (3 of whom are at Rainbow Bridge) have always and will always be my Friend gor Life. So happy i found this book. I hope to meet Rico and Bo again...maybe on a playdate with Tank

This is a very heart warming tale about friends. Yes, the friends are dogs, but the friendship they have for each other is the real story. Any child who likes animals will enjoy reading about their adventures. There are many funny parts to keep them smiling, but also some exciting scenes that will thrill young readers. It was great to see how the dogs worked together and balanced their strengths to solve problems. Great example for children that differences can be strengths.

What I liked: My son (9) and I have read this twice. It's a sweet, heartwarming story featuring dog protagonists, and stresses the courage it takes to overcome some scary obstacles. The adventures are fun, the characters are goodhearted, and there's enough action to keep young readers interested. My son enjoyed it both times.

What I didn't like: I am a huge, huge no-kill animal rescue advocate (I donate all proceeds from my own books' sales to no-kill rescue), and for two reasons I tend to stress the importance of never buying dogs from breeders: one: puppy mills, and even non-mills don't generally treat mamas well at all; and two: thousands of unwanted pets die every day in shelters, so why in the world are we breeding more? The dogs in this story are from a breeder, as are most dogs in pet stores, and I would have given this book five giant stars if the dogs had been rescues, or from a shelter or rescue group. If you read this book to your kids, or let them read it, make sure you know this going in, and explain these issues to your kids in words that fit their learning and emotional levels.

In sum: My son and I liked this book, and I'd recommend it for elementary-aged kids, with the caveat I listed above.

This is a heartwarming story about friendship and loyalty, of course, from none other than man’s best friend! Bo is a purebred bulldog pup who has lived with his owners until they decide to sell him through the pet shop. After arriving, Bo is confused and Rico the Chihuahua becomes his friend. They bond and grow even closer after two goons kidnap them from the store!

Bo and Rico put their brains, brawn and paws together to escape from the dognappers, but they soon learn their fate on the street is perhaps worse that it was with their dognappers. The streets of the city are cold, hard and mean. They run into a fair share of dangerous situations, until they get rescued by a very street savvy stray. Tank has been around the block before and he knows Bo and Rico are good pups, so he takes them under his wing.

As Bo and Rico survive day by day on the streets, their friendship grows steadily. They are inseparable and always work to protect one another. They have a myriad of adventures, the scariest of which are avoiding the Animal Control officer Jimmy and some run-ins with Mongrel’s pack of strays. They also rescue a lost Poodle, Pearl, and help her find her way back home.

The book contains all the elements that are appealing and engaging to younger readers. Although it’s marketed as a children’s book, I’d really categorize it as a MG book because it is a chapter book of length, and the vocabulary is a little higher than what would be found in a children’s book.

When I started reading this book, I already had an idea formed in my head. I mean the book summary is quite detailed and it provides a very good outline of the story. I mean I already knew that Bo & Rico are going to be `dognapped', they'll escape, meet Tank, get in trouble with Mongrel and Jimmy, rescue pearl and will emerge as the best buds at the end of the story. However, the book still managed to surprise me. The author takes you through a lot of emotions - amusing, gloomy and thrilling - it a full rollercoaster ride. The `adventures' that Bo and Rico get into actually teaches them a lot about themselves, each other and working together. And though Bo and Rico are definitely takes the center stage and the spotlight is on them, Tank too is sure to make his own place in your heart.

This is the third book that I have read by this author and all three of them are about dogs. I think that being a veterinarian; she really understands dogs and her true passion for these animals are reflected in her books. The best part is that this could be used to teach kids a lot about finding their own strength, about working together and about friendship.

I loved it and you will too...
