Book Description

The Circle of Friends Series February 14, 2000
The second in a remarkable coming-of-age series that will appeal to teenagers. See through high school senior Glen Sauten's eyes as, like King David before him, he learns what it means to be a man after God's own heart.

Glen Sauten
He’s just seen his life go from happily boring to roller-coaster crazy to better than his widest dreams. But it’s about to go back on the roller-coaster because of...

Nicole Grant
She seemed happy with Glen at first, but now he gets the feeling she’d like him to change. Is she confused, too, or has she made a mistake? Does she really like...

Charlie Thornton
Having Charlie for a friend nearly got Glen killed. Dating the girl Charlie wants borders on suicidal. And Glen isn’t getting much help from...

Phil Trent
Glen’s long-time best friend seems to be making matters worse, not better. But then he’s got his own reasons for disliking both Charlie and Nicole. As does...

Marta Billings
Getting even with Charlie is one of Marta's goals. Breaking up Glen and Nicole seems to be another one. Or, is she just plain crazy?

Life hasn't become any easier for seventeen-year-old Glen. At times, he thinks he would like to go back to the old uneventful days before he began to think for himself. But you can’t go back. You have to go forward. Even when you haven’t a clue where you’re going.

As everything in his life goes Topsy-turvy, Glen works hard to understand his friends, his parents, and most of all himself. Gradually, he learns that a real friend is someone who sticks around and helps out even when it hurts.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up-Glen is dating beautiful, popular Nicole Grant. His new pal, Charlie, wants to date her, and begins to threaten Glen with physical harm if he does not hand her over. Glen's best friend, Phil, has recently come to blows with Charlie over a different girl. Then Charlie challenges Phil to a drag race, which ends with Phil becoming paralyzed. Still, Charlie continues to threaten Glen. Nicole refuses to date Charlie because he is not Christian and he accepts Jesus so that he can date her. In the end, Glen loses the girl to Charlie, but he is reconciled by the fact that he has chosen to go to seminary school to study the Bible. Glen spends much of the book praying to God to help him solve his problems; he is a flat character who does little more than relate his troubles. The supporting characters are stock. Glen's parents are practically unaware of his deep devotion to God; the teens are good, bad, or nondescript; there are few helpful adults. The females are all fickle and one-dimensional. There are plenty of plot twists, making the story almost interesting. Yet the overpowering theme of "putting God first and all will work out fine" may render this series entry fodder for teen Christian fiction readers, and few others.

Review

A 2007 Read For Life pick

“Capture the nature of friendship and what that means in this world of trials and temptations.” Neil Anderson, author of The Bondage Breaker, Stomping Out the Darkness, Discipleship Counseling

“N. J. Lindquist has a unique gift of using the written word to reach teens for Jesus. Readers quickly learn to care about the realistic characters. The emphasis on discipleship and cell groups shows how teens can be equipped to be leaders in the church. N. J. makes Christianity and Christ come alive.” Joel Comiskey, Joel Comiskey Group

“N. J. Lindquist’s entertaining stories deal with a complex mix of teen relationships, moods, and motivations. Glen Sauten captured our sympathies as we rooted for him to stand up and discover himself. His problems challenge and develop his character, move the action along, and provide exciting moments. Lindquist has found the teen voice, but writes to the emotional needs of all ages.” Stephen and Janet Bly, authors of 100+ books

“Circle of Friends is a fantastic series! I meet with a lot of teens and speak to a lot of youth groups. I see the things they go through in N.J.’s novels. The authenticity of Glen’s (main character) journey is impressive. I kept thinking how is she going to be able to top this book, but she did, each book got better and better.” Herbie Kuhn, In-house Voice of the Toronto Raptors

“These teen novels don’t sound like an adult writing about being a teenager; they sound like teens writing and living through the challenges of being teens today. N. J. Lindquist has an authentic voice, credible story lines and a gentle, non-preachy way of getting her point across. I recommend the Circle of Friends novels to every teen I meet.” Linda Hall, author of 11 books including Chat Room, Steal Away, Sadie’s Song, The Coast of Maine Series

“N. J. Lindquist captures the voice of teenaged boys and offers a realistic look at the inner turmoil they face as they find their identity and make moral choices in the light of peer pressure. A master story-teller, Lindquist will hook you with the first couple of paragraphs and keep you reading.” Deborah Gyapong, author of The Defilers

4.0 out of 5 stars More Circle of Friends, March 29, 2006
This review is from: Friends Like These (The Circle of Friends Series) (Paperback)
If you got the first book(Best of Friends) in this Circle of Friends series, you are going to want to get this one, too. It continues with the same characters of Book #1. Life is not simple for teenagers. More complications, more relationship interaction.
