4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent romantic comedy
In the style of The Big Chill, this wonderful romantic comedy offers good character development, exceptional one liners, and a surprisingly good performance from Robert Downey, Jr. as he attempts to support the boring performance painfully offered by Claudia Schiffer. The ending is a little predictable but enjoyable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing to challenging but cute and warm
All of the reviews you have read to this point have been pretty accurate, for the most part. And, yes, I can easily see how this movie would receive anywhere from 1 to 4 stars--it just depends on what mood you're in and what you're looking for. The acting in this film, while not necessarily Oscar material, is cute and suitably campy. The one-liners are very well-timed...

The acting in this film, while not necessarily Oscar material, is cute and suitably campy. The one-liners are very well-timed. The cast is fairly balanced, ranging from a weak performance by Claudia Schiffer all the way to the very creative and noteworthy antics of Stephen Baldwin and Robert Downey Jr. Yes, it's predictable and none too challenging to follow, but if you need cute laughs for the above 18 crowd, you may want to check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Friends & Lovers, October 20, 2003

Apparently I'm the only one who found this movie funny and romantic! I laughed quite a bit, and yes it was campy and the acting probably wasn't the greatest, but I don't think the writer was expecting an Oscar nomination here. Above everything else, us ladies are finally getting pay back for having to sit through female nudity in just about every R rated movie. Friends & Lovers finally showed up some full frontal male nudity, and for that alone I gave it 5 stars! People- don't be so rigid when reviewing a movie! Enjoy the ridiculous too!!!

I saw this movie and loved the depth of every character and the diversity. Stephen Baldwin had me laughing till the end with his nons top antics. Stunning handling of straight and gay relationships. 5 stars in my book

Adorable little comedy about relationships. Robert Downey Jr. was ever so delightful as a wacky German ski instructor with a bit of a secret. His love scene was priceless, I coudln't stop laughing! In fact, Downey stole the film, even tho his on screen time wasn't much, compared to all the others in the film.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just for fun, December 15, 2000
By
This review is from: Friends & Lovers (DVD)
This is definetly not a movie for everyone, but i enjoyed it. it doesn't tackle any huge issues, and the plot is kind of predictable, but it was fun to watch. if you are in the mood for a no brainer movie, this is it...and we all know sometimes we want to watch a movie that doesn't need explaining...a movie you can just kick back and enjoy. I LOVE robert downey jr, and he is by far the best actor in the film. The best scene is when they guys try to get the girls to get naked in the hot tub with them, i laughed so hard when keaton dropped his towel and the girls went screaming into the house histarically laughing because of a rather large, very exposed extremity...i almost died...but you'll have to check it out for yourselves...not for the younger viewers...but fun if you want a no brainer...it reminded me of me and my friends on our little trips...i think that's why i liked it...it's cheesy, but relateable on some level...worth checking out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Title Sums It Up, August 12, 2009
By
This review is from: Friends & Lovers (DVD)
It opens cute, with a scene of friends hunting for a perfect Christmas tree for their shared apartment, and debating the merits of long-needle pine over spruce. The gang of friends heads off to a ski weekend courtesy of one of the group's father, and bed-hopping and wanna-be wackiness ensues. There are a few good performances (David Rasche as the johnny-come-lately dad trying to reconnect with his estranged son, well-played by George Newbern, are two stand-outs). The rest of the mostly B-movie casters turn in okay performances. There is a sweet gay sub-plot, too many annoying scenes involving Stephen Baldwin as the stereotypical, annoying, sex-obsessed member of the group, and some gratuitous nudity and language. Then there is Robert Downey Jr., playing a ski resort Lothario intent on seducing Claudia Schiffer, wielding a comic Austrian accent and one of the more creative seduction techniques you may ever see. He seems to be in a different, funnier movie -- the one I hoped I'd see when I popped this into the DVD player. The direction is a bit aimless, but maybe some key transitions ended up in the editing room trash can. And why did the wonderful Anne Magnusen take a bit part as Rasche's fiancee? What a waste. I'd have killed to see her and Downey mix it up! The film is mild rom-com meets relationship drama. Rent, don't buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars boring, August 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Friends & Lovers [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The script or story is really boring one, plus many pretentious or boring acting from almost all charactors in there. The only exception is Robert Downey's charactor - the 'German' skii instructor, which did add some sunshine and some real comic in. But nothing could save this film. Who cares...

1.0 out of 5 stars SKIP IT --This Movie is Boring and predictable, December 28, 2001

This romantic comedy has a few funny moments, particluarly the scenes with Robert Downey, Jr. Unfortunately, he is not the only one starring in this movie. Claudia Schiffer offers a weak perfomance, and the story-line is just not that interesting. It is a typical romantic comedy produced by Hollywood filmmakers --guy meets girl, guy competing with another guy for girls' attention, etc. (you get the idea.) If you really enjoy romantic comedies, and can't get enough, then you will probably like this light-hearted movie. For those of you who want more depth to the story-line, and quality in acting then you should pass on "Friends & Lovers."
