Charlie Vernon's Interpretation of Ewazen Bass Trombone Concerto is Amazing!,
By Boss Jones "t-bone junkie" (Columbia, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Friends in Low Places (Audio CD)
This is a really wonderful CD! I bought it for the Bass Trombone Concerto, but found the Wind Ensemble extremely able in all the concertos. The soloists are all outstanding. If you are a student of low brass instruments, this CD is a must for you.

This Cd is an awesome value! You 3 of some of the most well-known Tuba/Bass Trombone concertos there is and great interpretations to boot.I think Charles Vernon's interpretation of the Ewazen is better than Joseph Skillens, even though he is great this one wins. He ranges the third movement on down to a double Pedal A for trombone. Tuba's pedal A, not low A, pedal! it's a nice touch. I love the tempo on all movements. the Second movement is at a perfect tempo, very slow and solemn. This concerto is really fun to play, it isn't easy though. the third movement being by far the most difficult. this is a very good recording for this concerto! Floyd's playing in the Gregson concerto is something else. I can't tell what kind of tuba he's playing in this recording but his picture in the booklet looks like a huge 6/4 F or CC. It sounds like he's playing a French horn his tone is so good. only bad thing about this Gregson is that he doesn't play the alternate cadenza in the third movement, not a bad thing though. this is an outstanding interpretation! Vaughan Williams, where do i begin? this one of the most played concertos out there. I found out about "tuba concertos" in late high school and this was one of them. It is not easy at all, ranging from only a low F all the way up to one Double high Ab above the staff in the cadenza in the first movement; one of the most famous there is in existence. Although this concerto can be fairly easy to play it is not at all at first. Some say the third movement is the hardest but the second is. Floyd plays this whole concerto amazingly! flawless in every way while still retaining realism. I can't say much about the Strauss, it is played well but isn't as exciting to me as the tuba and bass trombone cocnertos, this is a horn concerto played on tuba. it's filler to me:-/ When I found this Cd All I wanted were recordings of the Vaughan Williams and the Gregson but got one big surprise in the Ewazen and filler lol I was extremely happy with purchasing this product and would highly recommend it to any tuba or Bass trombone player. THE ONLY con about this Cd is that it cracks during some notes on the tuba tracks.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Friends in Low Places (Audio CD)
Amazon sent me the wrong CD two times!. And, Amazon has not changed the order yet, and it has been months! I ordered the country CD, Friends in Low Places, Dwight Yoakum, I believe.
I sent many emails and they refule to change the ordering number/name. Plus, I can't order the CD I want because they won't change their database.
