G A Henty was a 19th century novelist, special correspondent and Imperalist. His best-known works are historical adventures. Henty is credited with writing over 80 books for young boys. This story begins in a field near Oxford, England in 1642. Three your people sit around the fire. There are two fifteen year old boys and a ten year old girl. Civil war has broken out. The two friends, like so many friends in the American Civil War, will fight on opposite sides. How will the boy's friendship be tested and can it and they survive in a war torn country?

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good military story, January 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I assumed that this book was about the American civil war, but nope- there was one in England in the 1640s when the House of Commons wanted to usurp some of King Charles' power. Naturally he didn't want to give up any power, so a war ensued.

The "Friends, Though Divided" in the title are two teenagers who fight on opposite sides of the war. It's more of a historical narrative than a novel, meaning that it is mostly about military action and doesn't have much in the way of emotion or personal relationships. If you're into English history and 17th century warfare, you'll find this to be a nicely detailed, well-written story.

The book is great - the binding is terrible. It falls apart on first reading. Do not buy this edition.
