Book Description

August 1993
There is an old saying that if you wear a friendship bracelet until the threads break and the bracelet falls off, your wish will come true. Why not make a bracelet and see what happens?

All you need to get started is embroidery thread and a safety pin. Simple instructions and clear diagrams for dozens of different stitches help you make as many bracelets as you can imagine. Invent your own design by mixing stitches, or try adding beads. There are also instructions for earrings, hair ties and key chains. Whether you're making them for wishes or for friendship, these bracelets are fun to create and wear. Here's everything kids need to make fabulous friendship bracelets, from ones with simple diagonal patterns to others with fantastic arrowhead designs. "A treasure....Would make a great gift." -- Kirkus Reviews

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 3-6. Friendship bracelets are still popular among preteens, and this is one of the few books around that give instructions for making them. Gryski offers basic instructions for thread bracelets and then branches off into various designs and other articles of adornment, such as earrings, that can be made with the same technique. Color diagrams seem clear and easy to follow, and the color photographs will get kids excited about the projects. From Kirkus Reviews

Friendship bracelets (or ``wish bracelets'') are miniature pieces of macrame, usually made from multicolored embroidery floss- -in a skill that children often pass along in true folk-craft fashion. Gryski's codification of basic techniques and patterns, together with numerous variations, will be a treasure to the many who are never without a half-finished bracelet pinned to their jeans. A ten-year-old enthusiast who tested several of these patterns judged the directions and colored diagrams clear and easy to follow. (Gryski's three books of string figures are standards; Cat's Cradle, Owl's Eyes was a 1984 ALA Notable.) This book--plus a few skeins of floss, safety pins, and scissors--would make a great gift for a summer camper or a perfect kit for a long trip or a rainy day. Reference list of basic techniques and hints for fixing mistakes. (Nonfiction. 7+) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. 5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, helpful, easy instructions for novice or advanced, August 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Friendship Bracelets (Paperback)
make this a particularly pleasant book. I bought it and the Busch book at the same time; although there is overlap, this book confines itself to knotted floss bracelets and very clear written instructions (the drawings are helpful too, but I was more impressed by the writing and the hints). Probably the better of the two for the younger or less experienced knotter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good gift for the kid in your life, February 5, 2010
I purchased this book as a gift for a niece. It's heavy on pictures for instruction and does a pretty good job of explaining how to make a pretty wide variety of bracelets.
