It's Christmas Eve, and Howie the dachshund puppy is scared. Who is this big guy in the red suit who's going to come down the Monroes' chimney with a huge sack over his shoulder? Terrific Book for 5 to 7 year olds,

My children (5 and 7) both loved this book. Both could read it easily. The longer Bunnicula books are much more humorous, but these books are probably easier for a 5 or 6 year old to read and comprehend.

A Christmas mystery makes for an excellent reader (Level 3),

Since it is the holiday season, I've been checking out many Christmas and holiday themed books from the library. My kindergartner loves these readers (Bunnicula and Friends) because they are fun, with interesting plots, and an element of mystery (she loves mysteries). In The Fright Before Christmas, Chester the cat and Harold the dog decide to investigate a series of strange sounds and happenings at their home. Howie the puppy is afraid of Santa, and these strange happenings are making the puppy extremely nervous. It is left to Chester and Harold to solve the mystery. Chester suspects Bunnicula, the 'vampire' bunny, but all is happily resolved in the end.
The story is written in a series of chapters, and each chapter heading will entice young readers to want to discover what happens next, "A Scary Christmas", "Strange Noises", "The Cellar", "The Ghost", "A Merry Christmas". This is a Level 3 reader and my kindergartner was able to read it with relative ease. According to the back jacket, a Level 3 reader here is described as "reading proficiently, with a rich vocabulary, more challenging stories, and longer chapters." She did get weary after reading the first two chapters, so we read this over several nights.
