Bela × 2, plus Vinny and Lon, January 11, 2010
This review is from: Fright Night Classics (DVD)
ST. CLAIR's single-disc quadruple-play FRIGHT NIGHT CLASSICS is dubbed from unrestored film stock, probably 16mm footage used decades ago for TV broadcast. Featured are three past masters of the horror genre, Lugosi, Chaney and Price, in what are now public domain movies. The Vincent Price selection (which was remade in 1999) is the best of this lot. All here are b&w.
TRIVIANA--
Watch for an "Indestructible Man" cameo by Joe Flynn, aka Capt. Binghamton on TV's
MCHALE'S NAVY. Also seen here is footage of Ann Doran as a police dispatcher that was cribbed from
HE WALKED BY NIGHT (1948).
The box office success of William Castle's "House on Haunted Hill" inspired Alfred Hitchcock to create his own low-budget frighter,
PSYCHO (1960).
"Dark Eyes of London" was the first film to receive Britain's "H" (for 'horror') rating. The Norwegian-born female lead, Greta Gynt, was originally signed by producer J. Arthur Rank, who hoped to mold her into the British Jean Harlow.
"Invisible Ghost" was Polly Ann Young's last picture and Bela Lugosi's premiere with MONOGRAM. He'd make eight more programmers for this Poverty Row outfit. (Miss Young retired at age 33 after getting married.)
Parenthetical numbers preceding titles are 1 to 10 imdb viewer poll ratings.
