This is a bad, bad book. I read 'My Side of the Mountain' numerous times as a child and throughout the years and never knew there were sequels which I happily raced off to request from my local library. The first book, published in 1959 and we as readers needed to assume that the story takes place at the time of the writing. Yet here in the third book, chronologically...

If you have read "My side of the Mountain" or "On the Far Side of the Mountaain" then you will throughly enjoy this book. If you have read the previous books than you may be wondering, "What ever happened to Frightful?" Well this book tells it all. Frightful is a peregrine falcon that was hand raised by Sam Gribley. After being set free by Sam becuase he couldn't keep an endangered speices, Frightful had many adventures. This book tells how it would be if you saw the world through Frightful's eyes. I would highly recomend it to anyone who has read the other books or not. You don't need to read the previous books for this captivating story to make sense!

5.0 out of 5 stars Frightful's Mountain: A Great Book, February 15, 2003
By

This review is from: Frightful's Mountain (Paperback)
Frightful's Mountain is about a peregrine falcon that is seraching for her previous owner. She must find out the one tree and the one mountain where he lives. She meets everything from dogs to poachers to other peregine falcons that come in her way. She finally gets back to him, but is then set free to live the life of a wild peregrine.
The reason I liked this book is because of its style. It was very much like the first book of the trilogy, except that it was from the falcon's point of view. I love adventure stories, so it is not a surprise that I believe this is exceptional literature, but this one puts you in the situation and sucks you into the text. I coundn't stop reading!
One other reason I believed this was one of the greatest books of all time is because it was so detailed. Descriptions lurked around every corner. I could almost see what was going on when I was reading! It was also very emotional and i wanted to get a tissue amnd cry into it. It was very impactful.
My favorite part was when Sam, Frightful's master, was trying to save two of her chicks that were stolen by poachers. His dog had crawled under the cabin's foundation and was met by a skunk's spray. The smell seeped through the floorboards and the poachers ran out of the building. Sam snuck in through the back door and collected the eyases in his hands. One of the poachers had run back in to get his gun and saw Sam. The conservation officers had come in just in time and had him at gunpoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Touching Story, October 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Frightful's Mountain (Hardcover)
Jean Craighead George really put a lot of effort into this book. It seems so realistic, I had to read the Author's Note to know most of the characters were fictional. It is a heartwarming story about Frightful, the peregene falcon that Sam trains. Sam is a very simple person who is very fond of animals like I am. This book is worth reading-most definetly.

This is a bad, bad book. I read 'My Side of the Mountain' numerous times as a child and throughout the years and never knew there were sequels which I happily raced off to request from my local library. The first book, published in 1959 and we as readers needed to assume that the story takes place at the time of the writing. Yet here in the third book, chronologically only two years after 'My Side', people now have push button phones, automated phone answering systems and cell phones. These anachronisms as well as the horribly stilted dialog (nearly insultingly simple in places and more reminiscent of Grammar School writing class than a world class novelist) ruin this book. I don't know what lead Ms. George to leap the story into the future but, at least in my opinion, it was a poorly thought out choice. 'On the Far Side of the Mountain' was a good if hard to believe sequel to 'My Side of the Mountain' this doesn't even come close to the quality or engaging read of the previous two. As my title says, this is only worth reading to complete the series. On it's own it's a poorly written, completely unbelievable story. I was terribly disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great Book, September 15, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Frightful's Mountain (Paperback)
The book I have chosen is called ''Frightful's Mountain''by Jean Craighead George. This is a good animal adventure book.Sam is a young man who lives in the forest and finds a pergegrine falcon. He names the falcon Frightful and raises her to be able to survive by herself. Frightful has 3 aeries, thats the name for baby falcons. The aerie's have great adventures as they grow up.Although she migrates she always comes back to sam and the forest she knows.
My favorite part of the book was when all the kids and people were helping and trying to save Frightful from the working men. The men were making alot of noise and the children dont want Frightful to be frightened and leave the nest or the aeries.
My least favorite part of the book was when the working men still worked on the bridge and didn't care that they were scaring a peregrine falcon. They were even a little mean when the children told them to stop.
My most favorite character in the book is Frightful. She seems to be a magnificent bird and has great adventures.
I really enjoyed reading about Frightful's falcon friend, chup. She helps him raise his 3 baby peregrine's.I also liked when Frightful ended up in a reserve for birds.I liked how many people would care about falcons and the many other birds.
This book was different from other adventure books because it really taught you how a peregrine falcon lives.By reading this book it makes you feel that if you looked up in a tree,Frightful would be sitting there.
If you enjoy animal books, learning how animals live and adventure books then this book is for you.I really liked it.
After reading this book I had some questions.why would Frightful build her nest on a bridge? Why would Frightfuls daughter attack her?
Read this book because you won't want to put it down. It's a wonderful book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A pick up to loose ends., June 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Frightful's Mountain (Hardcover)
This was a great follow up story to the Far Side of the Mountain. In the end, you wonder what happened to Frightful after she was released into the wild, and this is the perfect story to conclude it. I loved the detail of how Jean Craighead George described Frightful's actions. It is an easy story to get caught up in. Anyone who reads this won't be able to put it down until they're finished, especially if they have read the previous two books. Definetly a winner in my collection!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative, April 6, 2001
By
Barbara Davis (San Marcos, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Frightful's Mountain (Hardcover)
Having read the first two books about Frightful, My Side of the Mountain and The Far Side of the Mountain, I was anxious to read Frightful's Mountain. As in her other books, George weaves in important information related to environmental issues. While informative, the narrative is entertaining and suspenseful. The forward by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is a testament to how George's books have influenced many young people's lives over the years. Sam Gribley's care for the environment is an example we should all follow. Anyone who has ever lost, or had to give up, a beloved pet will be able to identify with this touching story.

This review is from: Frightful's Mountain (Hardcover)
I did this book for a book review at my school and LOVED IT! I couldn't put it down. It is beautifully written with the bird's point of view mixed in. Soon after i finished it, i gave it to my brother and it became overdue from the library because he was still reading it! My brother and I agree that it is an exciting and touching book. We reccomend it to you!

5.0 out of 5 stars ''Frightful finds Sam again'', March 12, 2000
By
This review is from: Frightful's Mountain (Hardcover)
Frightful is the third book of the series My Side of the Mountain. In the begining Sams sister Alice frees Frightful from mean people. She is lost trying to find Sam Gribly. She is hunting for food when all a sudden a male falcon shows off by swooping upside down and touching her talons. She mates with him{Chup} who had a mate because three nestlings are in the nest. Lady,Duchess and Drum. Two males and one female. Then they grow up and try to hunt by themselves by practicing on Frightful and Chup. They can not handle them practicing on them so they both sleep in two different places. Later on in the story it is migrating season so all the birds went southward to a warmer place so they could survive with food. Frightful did not migreate because she had stayed with Sam the whole year round in the same places. She has no food so she goes to find her hunting pal who is a dog named Mole. She gets to the house but no dog no owner. She flies to a house she sees and lands nearby and sees Mole coming towards the steps bleeding and limping. She sees food he usualy shared but he snarled at her. Frightful saw Duchess by the house. Two men who probably caught Duchess came outside with a net they captured birds showed them to people and hurt the bids after. The net was to capture, and they were going to capture Frightful. They captured Frightful and went in the house Frightful wiggle until she was free at last. She saw a nearby telephone wire and landed on it to purch she got shocked and burned. She fell all the way down to the grouned. An nice man came by saw Frightful and picked her up. Her feathers were burnt on the edges and she was shocked. The man held her. Frightful was dead. This is not the end so the peolple who read this you will need to read the rest of Frightful's Mountain
