3.0 out of 5 stars cool deal!
I recently moved into an old house with no central air. The summers here are mighty humid and hot, with temps of 100 degrees during the worst of it. I purchased this little window unit because it's cheap and easy to install.

Had new windows installed, worked and looked great, but the openings were smaller than expected. Wanted a window air conditioner for the living room. Found one at Amazon that would fit, and the reviews were good. I wasn't prepared for how well it worked, however. This little guy pumps out an amazing amount of cold air. I think the secret is, it is an older unit that was made before the energy conserving engineers got a hold of it. Maybe I should feel bad that I am not helping the environment as much as I could, but keeping me cool during a hot and humid August, somehow made the guilt go away.

If you want the most bang for your buck, buy this unit. If it can keep my living room cool, it will turn a small bedroom into a meat locker, no sweat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good unit for the price, May 30, 2007

For the price, this unit is pretty decent. It does a good job at cooling small bedrooms or offices. My only real complaint is that it is quite loud. There are different cooling settings and while the lower ones are much quieter, they don't do very much to cool the room. All in all, I'm satisfied with the unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small AC unit does a big job, May 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Frigidaire FAX052P7A Window Unit Air Conditioner (Kitchen)
I purchased this AC unit Frigidaire FAX052P7A Window Unit Air Conditioner primarily for it's small size as I wanted to cool my basement where I have a large screen TV, office and computer, but I wanted to do so without the expense of cooling the whole house. I've tried a portable AC units that exhausted interior air out a window through a hose, but I found that causes warm outside air to be drawn into the house with the net effect of no cooling, only more electrical usage. A split AC system would be the answer, but they cost ten times as much as this small window AC unit.

To mount the AC unit I removed the basement window and made a mounting plate from half inch pressure treated plywood and attached it to the window frame with stainless steal screws to prevent rusting. I intend to leave the AC unit installed permanently and just cover it in the winter. The unit's air filter slides out of the right side of the front panel, so I offset the unit in the mounting plate to allow the filter to be removed for cleaning.

In testing the AC unit I turned it on high cool and measured an output temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit, which is good given the volume of air. After an hour of running the water being removed from the basement was dripping from the outside part of the unit, which is a good sign that it's functioning normally. Being a basement doesn't have the heat load of an above ground room, I expect this small AC unit will do an adequate job of cooling and dehumidifying my basement.

Durring the summer months I calculated that this unit will save me about $40 per month in electricty compared to runing a 12,000 BTU AC unit installed in a room at the top of the basement stairs that I have been using to cool the basement through convection, which required keeping that room at 63 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus, this AC unit should pay for itself in a single cooling season.

3.0 out of 5 stars cool deal!, June 7, 2007
This review is from: Frigidaire FAX052P7A Window Unit Air Conditioner (Kitchen)
I recently moved into an old house with no central air. The summers here are mighty humid and hot, with temps of 100 degrees during the worst of it. I purchased this little window unit because it's cheap and easy to install.

After running the air conditioner for about three hours (on high), the bedroom will be fairly cool, but I'm not sure how it's doing on humidity. I never see any water dripping outside, but you can hear the water slurping around in the back of the unit.

However, this 5,000 BTU a/c will never get the room cold, cold, cold. The room space is 12' by 13' with 9' ceilings and while it (eventually) will get the air feeling comfy, it doesn't make it bitter cold. Even if it runs all night on high, max temp, it never gets the room past "comfy cold."

And it's noisy. I don't mind some white noise so I'm able to sleep even when the thing is blaring away but some folks might be disturbed by the loud fan motor.

For the money, it's a good deal and it'll keep you from going stark-raving mad when the dog days of summer hit. But it *is* very cheaply made. The unit arrives partially disassembled (which surprised me). The top bar and side pleats have to be installed. The styrofoam shipping blocks in the vents are nearly impossible to get out. Ick.

And those accordian pleats on the side can't possibly last more than a couple years. They're thin and light and I was afraid of breaking them whilst doing the install! (Pass the duct tape, please.) The shroud inside the unit (where the cold air blows) is lined with chincy-looking plastic and styrofoam. Short of making it out of corrugated cardboard, I don't believe it'd be possible to make this unit any more cheaply. But if it lasts for a couple years, I'll be a happy camper.

One last note, this has the LOWEST efficiency rating of any unit on the market. You get what you pay for.

I bought three of these units so I could survive the summer, so I guess I've voted with my wallet.

Package arrived quickly, well packaged. It is lightweight, relatively easy to move around, total shipping weight was listed as 45 lbs. Some minor assembly involved; a few screws. I haven't bothered to go past the low cool low fan setting; that works just fine for a 10x10 ft room with south and east facing exposure and a set of metal french doors in the middle of summer. It is louder than some AC window units and quieter than some, but it's not a problem in my office. The size is excellent, doesn't take up the whole window, easy to move around, doesn't stick out very far outside, and is nearly flush with the window frame inside; looks good too. It is easy to install for a single woman. Highly recommend if you're looking to cool a single room, or are a single woman with limited upper body strength.

5.0 out of 5 stars QUIET AND COOL, May 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Frigidaire FAX052P7A Window Unit Air Conditioner (Kitchen)
I bought this window air conditioner to replace a Sears Kenmore of similar size that was almost six years old, and near the end of its life. I read the many reviews, and I must say I was hesitant to buy this Frigidaire because of the numerous customer complaints of it being very loud. But I bought it anyway since it goes in my living room window far from my bedroom. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. The two previous Kenmore 5,000 btu window A/Cs I owned were both much noisier than this Frigidaire by far. Even a slimline Carrier I had before either Kenmore was noisier than this Frigidaire. Just to give you an idea how quiet it is, I own a small Vornado tabletop fan that makes more noise than this air conditioner when it is running on High Cool. I don't understand the numerous customer reviews stating that this A/C is loud. The design places about 80% of the unit (by depth) outside the window, with only a small 2 inches protruding into the room. All three of my previous window units had half of the overall depth inside and half outside, so that puts more of the mechanical parts such as the compressor and fan motor (the causes of noise) inside your room. This Frigidaire puts all these noisy parts outside, so it has to be quieter. I have double pane insulated vinyl windows, so maybe that also helps keep the noise outside. And keep in mind that no window air conditioner is quiet, they all make noise. I am just writing from my experience with the 3 previous window units I have owned over that last 15 years. Maybe some of these critical reviews were from people who never owned a window air conditioner before this purchase? As for its cooling capability, with my insulated windows, it keeps my 15' x 19' living room (a much larger room than it is rated for) a very comfortable 72 degrees when it is a very humid 90 degrees outside. So overall this is a GREAT little air conditioner.

4.0 out of 5 stars makes summer bareable, July 31, 2009

For some years now I've lived in this old stone house apartment. During the summer nights my one bedroom turns into an oven. So I picked this AC up because i could not bare another Pittsburgh summer in misery. The price was right and free shipping was great. I am very satisfied. It's only 5,000 btu, but it works great. One review said it was noisy? I don't agree. My only concern is a design flaw. The drain holes are not located in the right place. So water builds up and the fan sprays on the outside window. It doesn't really affect the performace and it only seems to happen on humid days.

I bought it for the size and price. It works very well for my small bedroom but it is quite noisy. Also it doesn't have an energy saver setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heat wave relief, August 29, 2009
This review is from: Frigidaire FAX052P7A Window Unit Air Conditioner (Kitchen)
I placed two of these units in my manufactured home it is 1720 SQ ft.
I live in the North West where it rarely gets over 90 degrees. I turn the units on before work on hot days and when I come home it is very comfortable I use mine for occasional use and they seem to work just fine. They were very easy to install. I have vinyl windows and I had to block up the front to get them to fit snug. Great value for my application no regrets.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware, July 9, 2008
Although this product will function as advertised, be aware that when the compressor kicks in, it is REALLY noisy. Not just a simple buzzing, but rather a low, loud, hum that will actually travel through the walls to other rooms in the house.
