4.0 out of 5 stars A Tip About The Filter and Ice Maker
First, I saw that one reviewer has a problem with leaking filters when used in an older Frigidaire. I've had no such problem with the original filter and two replacements that I've installed. (And yuck! to see what those filters have removed from the city water!) So, maybe higher than normal water pressure is the problem and could possibly be regulated. Just a thought...

I have had my Frigidare refrigerator for about 5 years now. The filters used to have a thick housing over the two smaller cylinders and it worked wonderfully. I never experienced any problems with those filters. About 2 years ago they changed the design taking away the outer housing leaving only the two smaller cylinders. Since then I have been through 8 filters in two years. When you cover the outlet hole and blow into the inlet hole, you can see the water spirt out of the side of the cartridge. It doesn't always occur at the top seal; however, many times the leak is in the plastic but you can see where the seam glue has run down to the spot where it's leaking. It appears that the glue they are using is dissolving the weak plastic and causing it to leak. I'm not sure what you can do about it but I just save my receipts and take them back about every 2-4 months when they fail. It's a pain but the manufacturer won't do anything about it. I just won't buy another Frigidare in the future!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Tip About The Filter and Ice Maker, August 23, 2010

First, I saw that one reviewer has a problem with leaking filters when used in an older Frigidaire. I've had no such problem with the original filter and two replacements that I've installed. (And yuck! to see what those filters have removed from the city water!) So, maybe higher than normal water pressure is the problem and could possibly be regulated. Just a thought.

My Rating:
The filters are 5-star performers but even at Amazon's lower price, I still consider them "pricey", so I dropped a star.

My Tip:
I kept my last filter in until performance (delivered water flow rate) had diminished considerably. It was sort of an experiment in economy. I was surprised when my ice maker started to jam with the under-sized "cubes" (they are actually shaped like half of a large thick coin) resulting from the slower water flow through the old filter. One or more of the ice ejector cogs would get jammed with one of the "runt" cubes. What obviously happens is that the water fill operation is controlled entirely by a timer, so reduced flow results in less water delivered to the tray cavities. The cycle continues and results in small cubes of ice for which the ejectors are not designed.

So my tip is that if you try to extend the life of the filter by accepting the slower water delivery rate, pay attention to the size of the ice cubes. When they are reduced to about two-thirds normal size, the ice maker is likely to become jammed. It's easy to see the problem after removing the cover from the ice maker, but the only solution is to install a new filter. Once I cleared the jam easily by hand but had to (carefully) use an ice pick the next time - and then immediately installed a new filter!

Regards,
EdB

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly as Ordered, June 26, 2007

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This product is an exact match for my Frigidaire. It slid right in and after a few glasses running through the system (to get rid of the air bubbles) things are running perfect again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Filter!, May 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Frigidaire WF2CB PureSource2 Ice And Water Filtration System, 1 Pack (Tools & Home Improvement)
This filter is for my Frigidaire Side-by-side, 26.0 cu ft, Stainless Steel refrigerator. Model # FRS6LF7JS0, S/N: 4A81707239. Manufactured April 2008.

I first operated the water dispenser on 08JULY08. After the RED light came on to change the filter, I kept putting it off...over and over until I became accustomed to seeing the pretty RED light. It complemented the GREEN ice dispenser light very well, especially during the winter holidays.

I finally purchased the replacement filter and replaced it on 14MAY10...yes, that's right, 22 months of filtering and at least 13 months overdue for a change. The filter, being see-through, allowed me to see the bits (albeit small) of debris that floated about when I shook the old filter. It was something of a gagging effect I experienced in my thoughts. I should have changed the filter a lot sooner was the thought thereafter.

The point I wanted to single out is that even though the filter would definitely not pass a health inspection, the water that came out through it was relatively clear...I mean it! I would have never known that the filter was mucked-up had it not been for the RED "change me now!" light. Therefore, this filter is a very good filter.

However, the manufacturer states that this filter is to be replaced after 6-9 months of use or after a flow of 400 US Gallons, whichever comes first. I am assuming that the RED "change me now!" light is initiated by the filter backing up (Differential Pressure a.k.a. Delta-P), if not by this means, then perhaps by a flow meter? Whichever it may be, change your filter when the manufacturer says so. The price is high per unit, but if you were to change the filter out every 6 months, the price per day is approximately $0.19 (approximately $0.13 if every 9 months).

After you install the new filter, the manufacturer says to run water through the filter for 3 minutes. This will cycle out the air in the new filter and kind of give it a rinse at the same time. The water, at first, will come out somewhat like heavily diluted milk, due to the teeny-tiny air bubbles making their way out.

Don't forget to reset your RED filter light (if you have one)!

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty design, January 22, 2010
By

These filter housings ALWAYS leak after a few months. This is a design issue related to the Pure Source 2 design, not Amazon or its vendors.

Our water pressure is not too high at 60 PSI. The plactic housings would eventually get a hairline crack with the older cast plastic type of filter. The new filters are made of tubular plastic stock but they eventually leak where they are glued to the O-ring end of the filter.

I have had my floor soaked several times with this faulty design.

To further the leak review discussion:
Just called Frigidaire/Electrolux to ask about the leaky redesign. They cannot tell me whether what they sell on THEIR OWN WEBSITE is the original design (2 cylinders enclosed in a plastic rectangle) or the faulty (2 cylinders not enclosed). Customer service assured me that the part would fit; when reiterating I was concerned about the 2 cylinder design and not the fit they suggested going to Lowe's to look at the part available. Want to order from Amazon as $10 cheaper- note the customer photo is the original rectangle and Amazons photo is the exposed 2 cylinder design.

**I don't think the company is concerned about the flaw.** A suggestion: letter writing campaign to the company- companies do seem to respond better to something in writing (it is visible proof they ignored the consumer if they don't act). Maybe involve your local news; many like faulty product reports/warnings. Let's ramp up the bad publicity and make them care about us!

My situation: Three year old fridge which I have not replaced the filter on even once given the reviews online. In case Frigidaire should ever read Amazon reviews, please know knowledgable consumers do exist who will (1) not buy the faulty filters, (2) not buy Frigidaire/Electrolux products in the future, and (3) discourage any friends from buying these brands. (Interestingly, I have had TurboTax respond to a mostly positive Amazon review with one minor suggestion- a surprise and an indication a company cares). A shame if Frigidaire/Electrolux loses business this way- my whole kitchen is stainless Frigidaire appliances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ease of ordering products, May 15, 2007
This is the filter for a specific model of the Frigdaire. I liked the ease of finding the data on which one, how to order, the prices, etc.
It was an excellent price for the 3 pack, saving us over $50 based on the replacement cost of our local dealer.

1.0 out of 5 stars PureSource2 filters are leaky, September 13, 2010

I've had my Fridgedaire for 3 years now. The PureSource 2 filters are costly and are SUPPOSED to last at least 6 months. In my fridge they last up to 3 months, sometimes less, before they start either leaking, or in the case of the last one I bought - spewing water. Had I known about these filters I wouldn't have bought this type of refrigerator. So far I've spent $120+ for filters annually. I like the idea of saving receipts and just taking them back as defective. When I buy my replacement today I'll do that and just put the receipt on the fridge door - since I know I'll need it in 6 - 8 weeks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Leaked after 3-months. Cut corners now flawed, August 29, 2010

The PureSurse2 started to leak after 3-months in use. As mentioned in other reviews, my previous PureSourse2 had a plastic shield over the two nipples that plugs into filter compartment. This model does not have the shields and I believe as a result over time, pressure builds up and gradually loosens the connection resulting in the leak. I believe that the maunufacture changed the design as a way to save costs during the maunufacturing. As a result this new design leaks to happen easier.

1.0 out of 5 stars Leaking Filters, October 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered the expensive Pure Source2 ice and water filters from Amazon. After 3 months, the filter started leaking in my refrigerator. SO I put another filter in and the same thing happened. I've now gone thru 5 filters, all 5 start leaking after 3 months even though they are supposed to last 6-9 months. I thought maybe I had a problem with my refrigerator and I had paid for a 5 year warranty. The technicians came out and said it is a COMMON problem with these filters and filters are not covered on my warranty, so I was charged a $80 service fee, even though I had explained the problem to the warranty company!! Couldn't they have disclosed this common problem to me on the phone instead of me wasting $80??? The good thing about amazon is that after emailing them about the leaking filters, they sent me free replacement filters. The problem is that the replacement filters still leak!! Frigidaire PureSourece2 needs to improve the quality of their filters!
