I highly recommend Fritz 11 to any chess player who wants to improve their game.
Paul Cornelison
Basically they advertise 14 hours of video that for the most part turns out to be selling clips for other products, thus of little value for the customer.

I have owned every Fritz version since number 5, and I will continue to purchase each new version as a statement of its quality and value.

What I love about Fritz 11 is the Calculation Training function... this, in and of itself, makes Fritz 11 worth the purchase! The remainder of the program features have been to the greatest extent duplicated elsewhere. I've never seen anything on the market that resembles the Calculation Training function at all.
The video clips, though obviously promoting the full DVDs, are nice since they do give an entire game or entire training session. If they were to cut the game (or training session) off mid-stream, it would be a poor marketing ploy. The way it's set up is useful, as well as an excellent way to test drive other Chessbase DVDs.
Being able to set up a Tournament, using several different engines as well as allowing a human to participate, is an nice feature that I have yet to experiment with.
The only thing I really don't like about the program is the electronic eye that hovers above the 3D board, along with the thumbnail viewpoint of this E-eye, I find it to be annoying and have yet to find an option to make it disappear.

First of all, if you look at my buying record, you will see that I have bought a lot of Chessbase products (and for the most part happy), but this latest effort is a serious insult to the customer's intelligence. Basically they advertise 14 hours of video that for the most part turns out to be selling clips for other products, thus of little value for the customer. I am very offended.

Good part: new training function for calculation training*** two thumbs up, this is great and what gives it the two stars! I am confident that this will improve my rating!

Updated opening book and game database: nice but that is also available in many software.

Puzzles: you can get free good puzzles, just try [...]

3D eye: still evaluating

Overall: Fritz 11 offers one very good addition, but at the same time there is false advertising (or very misleading advertising). I cannot figure out how to evaluate such a situation, it is almost as if your best friend helps you and also lies and cheats you at the same time.

ABOUT the ENGINE.
There are some algorithms, from Deep fritz 10.
Fritz 11 are better for much from his predecessor, i made a engine match Fritz 10 vrs Fritz 11, five minutes bliz game. Won Fritz 11 (W=3, D=0, L=1)

The bad news, fritz 11 are not the best engine on market. F11 loses agaist another engine (W= 0, D=4, L=2). For Amazon policies i can't revealed the engine.

(The bliz game is only to give an idea)

ABOUT THE OPENING BOOK, Fritz 11's book are twice of bigger, from his predecessor.

BONUS FROM CHESS BASE
F11 is a Great deal, it has two new training option, that you will enjoy. Combination training, fritz help you to calculation the position and Tactical training, Fritz gives puzzles, for five minutes.

In this DVD, ChessBase, given you, two hours in several clips videos with Kasparov, Daniel King, Shirov, Andrew Matin and other. Maybe this is a mean to merchandize other products. Even that, is a great gift.

I do not recomend this software for kids or player who loves positional chess

This is a great product for analyzing your games (I'm sure for playing head to head against the computer also, although I don't use it for that). The post game and positional analysis which can be done from PGN or FEN files is very well done.

My only gripes are the interface, figuring out how to load FEN and PGN files is not very intuitive. Trying to manually enter moves for both sides also takes some work to figure out. Also, the "Explain All Moves" option is wonderful, but tends to hang on certain positions, and there does not seem to be a way to configure around this. Perhaps there is a patch that addresses this, which brings me to my final negative point on this product, which is that finding patches/updates is a very painful process.

Please realize these gripes only keep it from being 5 stars, its still a great product that I use daily. The analysis is priceless if you are trying to improve your game.

I would say the most important new feature of Fritz 11 - to the practical, average player - is the calculation training mode which allows you to make moves on the board without moving the pieces recording your move orders (even illegal moves!) within a game: so you have a record of how clear your tactical thinking is. I think you should visit Chessbase.com to see a video example of this mode in action. It's quite cool.

For me, calculation training is worth it because I use it. I think it helps me improve my ability to test my capacity to visualize variations and later see if they were correct. However, if you're unimpressed with this mode or simply doubt you'll use Fritz 11 for this purpose, then probably you'd be better off with the very similar and far cheaper Fritz X. The chessboards (which are quite attractive, both in 2D and 3D), the othertraining functions, fairly similar.

A bit overwhelming at first due to so many options. A bit of a learning curve to the software but the manual that comes with it is easy to understand. What I like the most about it, is the ability to analyze your games to find where you might have made blunders and how to improve your skills. The ability to view worldwide chess tournaments online while they are occuring is also a great plus. Well worth the money spent for the software, plus a whole year free access to Chessbase.com, you just can't beat it. Highly recommended for the chess enthusiast.
