A wonderful kids book with rich and humorous illustrations.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Frog On His Own (Picture Puffin Books) (Paperback)
The story of Frog's adventures and mis-adventures in the park are told with subtle and humorous illustrations. Toddlers, pre-schoolers and even beginning readers will smile and laugh at the encounters between Frog and other park visitors.

Great speech-language tool,
This review is from: Frog on His Own (Boy, Dog, Frog) (Hardcover)
I am a speech-language pathologist and I like to use wordless (or almost wordless) books with my preschoolers sometimes to practice their speech sounds in a conversational context, as well as informally assess their sentence structure and story telling skills.
This is the story of a frog who has gotten away from the boy who was carrying him. The frog gets into some mischief throughout his adventure, such as trying to eat a bee and getting stung, disrupting a picnic, breaking a toy boat, and drinking a baby bottle. My students did not seem to like this book as much as other ones, which surprised me. I think it may be because the pictures are not in color. I think the pictures are very well done and full of detail and emotion. Mayer has quite a few books like this that tell a story without words and they are all beautifully done. Great preschool book.

My kids love these books! They can sit and tell the story to themselves or I can read it to them and we can talk about all the facial expressions and what they could be thinking or saying! I think a great thing to have in any kids library!

A Wordless Comedy for Young Children,
By Shanna A. Gonzalez "eyelevelbooks.com" (Gaithersburg, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Frog On His Own (Picture Puffin Books) (Paperback)
In this book a boy goes to the park with his pet dog and frog, leaves the frog alond to find whatever trouble he can. The frog flicks out his tongue to catch an insect, which turns out to be a bee. He disturbs a young couple's picnic, sinks a young boy's toy boat (retrieved by his annoyed mother), and joins a baby in its crib (swiping a sip of its bottle). This is a kind of visual comedy perfect for young children, and simple enough that after a parent helps with interpretation the first time, it may be fully enjoyed alone.

I loved these books growing up. Each time I opened the book I could make new stories and discover new details I hadn't seen the time before. This book, as well as other wordless children's books, have been great tools in assisting our autistic son to use correct usage of speech. It enables him to learn discriptive words and sequence of events while he tells us the story from his perspective. In addition the illustrator uses excellent skill in portraying emotion in the animals and child. This also helps my child learn about cause and effect that create certain emotions. I think this illustrated book is the benchmark for other picture books to follow.

This is a wordless picture book that involves an adventure of a frog and a boy. Mercer Mayer has several wordless picture books in this series and my favorite is Frog Goes to Dinner. I particularily like these for use in a writing station. I am a second grade teacher and I have relunctant writers and using wordless picture books allows me to get them to write. Students can start out short and then expand on their stories by adding adjectives and adverbs. It also helps me to assess vocabulary of my students. I use these books to have students "read" to me so they can understand and practice fluency. Delightful books!
