"They call me Sir Robin, the brave...",
By CodeMaster Talon (Orlando, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Frog Prince [VHS] (VHS Tape)
What a mountain of talent! Jim Henson continued his legendary roll with a charming made-for-TV version of "The Frog Prince". Like the equally wonderful "Hey Cinderella!" the plot more of less follows the classic fairy tale, but only the Muppets would have a plot hinge on a line like "Break the hall in the candle of her brain!".
Kermit guides us through the story as we meet the lovely Princess Lenora, just turned nineteen, and everything a beautiful Princess should be: Perfect complexion, flaxen hair, kind disposition, and wealth galore. There's only one problem: She only speaks backwards, and no one in the kingdom can understand a word she says. She wasn't always that way, someone's obviously been up to devious tricks, but who? It couldn't possibly be the hideous crone who claims to be the King's sister, could it? Enter Robin the Frog, who claims to really be Robin the Brave, a prince under an enchantment. He recognizes the old crone; it's the same woman who turned him into a frog. From there it's all a series of twists and misunderstandings, falling in love and daring escapes until at last we come to the classic fairy tale ending. What makes these Muppet tales so fun is the level of humor that appeals to kids and adults alike, such as the hilarious lullaby for a monster and the withering sarcasm of "Aunt Taminilla". If you like the Muppets I can't recommend "The Frog Prince" enough, and along with its counter point "Hey Cinderella!" the show represents what is missing in much of children's programming today. That's what DVD and video are for, right? GRADE: A (And if you enjoy this, check out Henson's little-known fairy tale show "Storyteller". It's even better.)

lifetime favorite,

I remember watching this movie during its first live telecast back in 1971 with my family. It quickly became my favorite movie with my sister and myself singing "ni'm einteen..." all day long. Now it is my 4yr old daughters favorite movie as well. As our library's copy is very bad with "blue out's" I really wish to purchase a few copies for us and our local library. I can't wait for it to be rereleased! Be sure to find this one to watch - it is definately an eternal classsic!

A classic fairytale retold in the unmistakable Henson style. Children and adults alike will enjoy this song filled version. With singing frogs galore and a backwards speaking princess, this movie will keep your family smiling and singing.

Kiwi's Love It Too!,

This is the best Muppets film/TV special ever! The story is lovely and Robin shines. The music is wonderful (apart from the Prince's song at the end (shudder)) and kids of all ages adore it (I'm 32!).
I live in New Zealand and have been hunting for a copy for 20 years, since my sister was born, and have finally found it here on Amazon. Just in time, as I have a little girl of my own now and I'm sure she will love it as much as I do. I will be getting a copy ASAP but please, please release this on DVD as it is truely lovely and I think I will wear out the video!

A treasure from my childhood,

I first came to know this broadcast from the long-playing record that was marketed. The bi-fold record jacket told the story using a story-board sequence of stills from the original broadcast, and where necessary, Kermit narrated. My sister and I played this album over and over and over.... We both memorized it, and today many of the phrases are "you had to be there" jokes between us. The album wore out and was lost in the shuffle of growing up and going to school.... I finally tracked down a good-condition used VHS release of the broadcast, which I play only rarely because I'm afraid of damaging the tape.
I really do hope this is re-released on DVD. The story and the songs and the muppets are incredibly memorable. I wouldn't mind seeing a recasting to update it - if everything were staged the exact same way.

A Must-Have Muppet Classic!!!,
By Michael Wach (Pittsburgh, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Frog Prince [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is one of the best Muppet films EVER! It's cheesy, but hey, it's still great! This is Robin the Frog's best performance, as he upstages Kermit flippers down. My brother and I had this movie since we were kids and we still watch it from time to time (we're now 25 and 27 years old). Yeah, I know, it's pathetic that adults watch this... but hey, it's the Muppets! If you love the Muppet movies, this is a must own to give to your children so that you can enjoy it right along with them! Your adult friends will make fun of you, but it's worth it!

My mother recorded this film on television when I was very young, I have watched it for years. I know every song and even the jokes the king tries to tell. I even bought the record to listen to the songs. I would love it if this film was put on DVD and if they made a soundtrack for it.

I just wanted to agree with another review already written. This is a great movie and I have been looking to purchase it however, I no longer own VHS tapes nor do I own a tape player. I would purchase in a heartbeat if it were on DVD.

Children will be mesmerized by the singing and dancing frogs, and ultimately be convinced that "The life of a frog is the life you should choose". When I was little, I spent quite a while trying to figure out exactly what "Bake the hall in the candle of her brain" meant. This video is truly a classic, and I hope it is re-released soon.

Our daughter grew up watching this video until the tape wouldn't play anymore. She has always remembered the movie, even reciting from it through the years. I found it on Amazon and decided to get it for her for Christmas, and I know she is going to be thrilled when she opens her gift...and she's now 26! I just wish the movie was offered in DVD form. Good thing we've kept our VCR handy.
