The venue is Southern California, but the conflict revolves around the interests of certain Arabs and Israelis in this mid-1980s thriller.

A wealthy, cultured Iranian family now living in the U.S. is being blackmailed because someone has found out that they are actually illegal aliens. Discovery would mean deportation back to Iran, which would be a death sentence for them. The family calls upon Fiddler, an ex-violinist with a talent for dealing with danger, to find out who the blackmailers are. In the process, Fiddler becomes involved with an aging Mossad operative and his beautiful but haunted daughter.

The story is fast-paced and engrossing, but the political attitudes of the characters seem dated now (which is the reason for only 3 stars). The exciting action climax was fun to read.

Once again, Elizabeth Lowell hits a home run. Fast paced and witty, Fiddler solves the problem with charm and grit.

I appreciate Fiddlers humor and willingness to admit to his own personal flaws. It is a series where I often read the stories more than once.

Great series. Hope Ms. Lowell continues with Fiddler and Fiora. I read entire series and couln't get enough. Fiddler is a unique hero and Fiora a truly feminist heroine.

Good, enjoyable read in the Elizabeth Lowell fashion. I like the characters of Fiddler and Fiora and the focus on the plot rather than the strained romance.
