I have to admit that I was really excited about the Shape Tape from FrogTape. We've done our fair share of decorative painting, and this seemed pure genius. Add the fact that it's FrogTape and I was totally convinced this was the greatest invention ever... The end result is that it does work and it looks good - not great pre-touch-up, but good. It's getting it up and having to do quite a bit of touch ups that keeps me from totally raving about this.

The process of applying the tape was by no means simple. First off, there is backing on the tape that needs to be peeled off. It doesn't sound like much, I know. Still, to measure out the tape, get it level, peel the top or bottom half of the backing off, smooth the tape down, try not get it tangled on itself, make sure to keep the long piece of tape in a straight and level line... only to go back and have to remove the other half of the backing... It's not the fastest or easiest task.

Also, you have to avoid actually touching the sticky side of the tape, because it quickly loses its grip/stickiness. The peaks/valleys of the shape easily get folded on themselves with the slightest touch, so you can completely lose the shape of the design. It's not at all in keeping with the high standards that "normal" FrogTape has set.

We did a square border on one wall, so it might not be a typical problem for just a straight line... but we couldn't keep the corners secured to the wall at all. Where the two lines/borders met, it just kept poking up. Before putting the second color on, we went over the corners with the first color, so if anything seeped through, it would be the same color as the frame/border, but that didn't help at all.Read more ›

I like frog tape in general. I bought this to use for a small project. It's definitely not enough to do a large project though. I am not 100% sure it's worth the cost, but it is a fun product to try out.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU PLAN TO USE ON CANVAS. I bought this tape when I wanted to make a chevron design on a canvas. I was planning to make a cute monogrammed item to hang in my nursery for my son. I bought the tape, followed the directions EXACTLY...and realized it wasn't sticking at all. I tried taping the ends to the canvas with masking tape...no luck. I set a heavy object on my canvas overnight hoping it would help to get the tape to adhere...some luck. I tried painting the canvas the next night and it turned out pretty awful. I've included a picture to show the end result after the paint dried and the tape was removed. This tape may work on walls where you can do touch-ups, but it does not work at all on canvas.

Good luck if you buy it!!!!!

This stuff works great and it easy to use. Make sure you go over the tape and press it down right before painting. Have used it in both of my girls rooms and they came out terrific.

This product is okay. It does allow someone to create their own designs, however I did expect more of it than what I received. I used it when we painted our son's bathroom walls and although the design was okay, the tape did not seal to the wall as well as I think it should have and the paint seeped under areas of the paint. Also, there is a powder on the surface of the tape that creates a coating. I washed the taped after putting it on the wall, however when I painted over it, my paint brush, remnates of the powder gummed up in the bristles and left "gobbs" that I had to scrape off the wall. I don't do this often so it could be "operator error", however I did read the instructions and it never mentioned anything about the powder build up. Also, there were areas throughout the roll of the tape where the powder seeped between the backing/tape and created an spot where there was no adheisen so I had to "tape over" those areas so the paint did not get in ther (blue tape on video). I will have to "touch up" about 1% of the areas,so all in all, it is a product that does help a DIY'r!!

I've really liked using this tape. I used it to paint a backsplash in my travel trailer. I don't like that I have to press down the tape with a scraper after it is stuck on. I did get a little be of bleed that was relatively easy to touch up. I love the result and will likely use the tape again.

I love the concept and the fact that I can use it to create very nice edges on painted furniture, BUT it is very hard to use. It peels off a backer and twists around before I can apply it. With wastage from this twisting,I think it will take the entire role (245 yards) to create a 32 inch border. This product is a great idea, but needs a lot of work to make it reasonable useful.
