GameSpot Review

Not to be confused with Frogger 2: Threeedeep for the Atari 5800, Frogger 2 is a sequel to 1997's 3-D incarnation of everyone's favorite suicidal toad. Injecting the series with a bit more depth, Frogger 2 introduces a villain, the evil kidnapping alligator Swampy, and Lily, a pink companion with whom Frogger alternates level duties. In this installment, Swampy has kidnapped all of Frogger and Lily's young, and has scattered them across several worlds of 3-D hopping action. It's Frogger's and Lily's duty to get them back. So the gauntlet has been thrown down. As either Frogger or Lily, depending on the level, you hop around all three dimensions, avoiding enemies, picking up extra lives and power-ups such as the quick hop and the auto hop, rescuing baby Froggers, and generally trying not to get yourself made into a greasy spot on the road. With themed levels ranging from underground ant colonies to Aztec pyramids and futuristic space stations, one thing is crystal clear: this ain't your daddy's Frogger. Along with the primary goal of collecting the baby Froggers, there are also coins scattered throughout the levels. When all the coins in a level are collected, bonus modes and levels are unlocked. Along with the standard single-player mode, there is also a four-player competition mode.

Frogger's 1997 incarnation gave the Frogger concept a complete overhaul, adding that oh-so-important third dimension and more depth, as well as a larger variety of levels, new types of jumps, multiple goals, a more complex puzzle-game feel, and a toe-tappin' soundtrack. Frogger 2 doesn't have such lofty goals, content with just giving the last installment a tune-up. Expect larger levels, higher character detail, and higher frame rate, thanks to the Dreamcast hardware. As for the catchy tunes, Frogger 2 looks set to outdo Frogger in spades, escalating toe-tappin' to rump-shakin'.

With darker, more adult-themed games populating the video game market, Hasbro Interactive brings an alternative with bright graphics, solid puzzle gaming, and a unique take on a classic gaming icon. Frogger 2 is set for a September 2000 release. --Ryan Davis--Copyright © 2000 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. 4.0 out of 5 stars Brings back good old memories..., January 6, 2002
This review is from: Frogger 2 Swampy's Revenge (Video Game)
Back in the eighties in the time of the first video game arcades Frogger used to be one of my favorites. Now this 3-D version, with several variations of the same theme, comes back. I have to say though (maybe it's because things have evolved) that I was not so thrilled to play it as I thought I'd be. But still it brought good old memories.

I loved Frogger back in the early days of video games. This remake has brought back the arcade game with improved graphics and an adventure with fun puzzle solving trickery and traps. Being a frog has never been so much fun! This game successfully mixes simplicity and modern gaming. It is easy to learn and control, so friends of all ages can easily pick it up and join in for some four player fun!

If you have been waiting for a great Frogger come back this is it. If you find it repetative, just save and put it down for a later time. It is not always a good thing for a game to suck up hours of time without opportunities to escape and live life for a while. A great game for families and friends.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Frogger 2. I will confess to not being much of a Frogger fan in my arcade days, but I took a chance on this one. Definitely not regretted. What makes this game brilliant is that the controls are very easy to master (compared to many video games which require you to spend hours to master all the different combinations) and the overall concept of the game is simple to grasp. It's the kind of game you (and guests) can pick up in a minute! But that's not to say it's simple or boring. Like all great arcade games, it has that addictive quality that keeps you coming back for more. The depth here is in the level design, tricks, traps and the general coordination you need to get through it. The cute graphics and sound track just add to its appeal. Highly recommended. (I hope Majesco comes out with more titles as good as this one!)
