Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this cleverly re-imagined version of the 400-year-old Scottish folk song, wife-hungry Froggie doesn't have a sword and pistol by his side, but his heart is definitely on his sleeve. Trapani (The Itsy Bitsy Spider) focuses her new lyrics solely on Froggie's attempts at wooing, and sets the goings-on in a vaguely Edwardian era a period that dovetails nicely with the gentlemanly demeanor of her hero. In Trapani's sentimental, pastel-hued watercolors, Froggie's a dapper dresser and an earnest (not to mention chocolates-bearing) suitor. But he makes the mistake of picking four non-amphibians in a row as potential mates (the fetching Mousie of the traditional song, then Turtle, Birdie and Chipmunk), and not even the flowery garlands that enclose the lyrics can blunt the harshness of the ladies' rejections. Says Birdie: "I would think about it if you flew,/ But you smell of swamp; you're slimy too./ No thanks, no thanks." The middle, text-less spread of the book finds Froggie in the dumps and disconsolately reading a book titled "The Lonely Frog" in bed. But his luck changes the next day when he spots "a vision by the creek" a lovely lady frog, who, in a nice feminist turn, pops the question to him. The couple's sunlit formal wedding, with all the former woo-ees as bridesmaids, is the very definition of Happily Ever After. Music for the song is included on the last page. Ages 2-7.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3-Trapani has made quite a career out of taking beloved children's songs and extending the story with humor and fun to spare. Her latest offering takes "Froggie Went A-Courtin'" to its logical conclusion. First Mousie turns down his proposal: "I don't want a frog to hold and squeeze,/Oh no, oh no./I don't like the water, you hate cheese,/So you might as well get off your knees,/Oh no, oh no." Then, in turn, he is rejected by Turtle, Birdie, and Chipmunk. A spread shows the dejected suitor alone in bed reading The Lonely Frog. The next page (and day), he espies a vision by the creek: a lovely frog. She asks him to marry her and he joyfully croaks, "I'll marry you!" The next spread shows the happy pair tying the knot with Froggie's former love interests as bridesmaids. Trapani's joyous and bright watercolors are perfectly wedded to the cheerful new version of this Scottish song. A page with the music and all of the verses is handy for a sing-along. A great addition to any library, especially for storyhours.

More About the Author

In 1961, when I was seven years old, my mother and I came to America. My father, sister, brother and paternal grandmother all stayed behind in the tiny apartment in Warsaw, Poland where the six of us had lived. Under Communist rule entire families were prohibited from traveling abroad so my mother took me, the youngest, hoping to bring the rest of the family over soon thereafter. Tragically, she died before fulfilling her dream. My father died a few years later. Due to extenuating circumstances I was unable to return to Poland and twenty-seven years passed before I was reunited with my siblings. I spent three and a half years in a Catholic Children's Home and then, after completing High School, moved to the Hudson River Valley in upstate New York.
In the ensuing years I worked as a nanny, short-order cook and waitress while studying Art at the State University in New Paltz. After graduation I worked in various capacities - as a rock climbing guide, real estate broker, caterer and freelance illustrator. But all along I had one dream - a dream I held onto since I was a child - to make picture books. My portfolio bulged with art for children and I just hoped for that lucky break.
The break came one day in 1990 as I rode my mountain bike and a turtle crossed the trail in front of me. The serendipitous encounter inspired a poem which led to the publication of my first book, What Am I? An Animal Guessing Game.
My career blossomed with the release of The Itsy Bitsy Spider, an extension of the original rhyme, which is still going strong after an amazing nineteen years. Positive response from early educators encouraged me to retell and illustrate more nursery rhymes, and I am delighted that my books are used in schools nationwide and abroad.
I have always loved children's literature - from the wacky brilliance of Dr. Seuss to the timeless, love-filled classics of Margaret Wise Brown and a slew of others in between. The combination of engaging text and enchanting illustrations has always been an irresistible package, fascinating me all my life. As a child I spent hours immersed in the magical world of picture books. As an adult I try to re-create some of that magic for others to enjoy.
Looking back on my childhood in Poland, I feel that I owe my family gratitude for fostering a creative environment in our home and for instilling in me a love for books, language, art and music. For the brief time that I knew my parents their encouragement left a lasting impression and contributed greatly to the realization of my lifelong dream.

4.0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT, BUT . . ., December 26, 2003
the lyrics are not the ones you might be expecting, and may not "match" lyrics you have on a CD or elsewhere. In this modernized version of the classic Scottish tune, froggie carries "roses & chocolates" by his side rather than a sword & pistol. He doesn't marry Miss Mousy -- rather, he marries a fellow frog only AFTER he has asked all of the other animals in his environs to marry him, and they reject him for various reasons (he likes a wet home, whereas miss birdy lives in a tree; he eats bugs when other animals prefer nuts -- how would such a couple resolve their differences? Is this a subtle criticism on miscengenation? The "stick to your own kind" message in West Side Story?) The illustrations are full-page, beautifully-colored, and first-rate, and the rhymes are very clever; they're just different from those I learned as a child. I would definitely recommend the book -- just want you to know what to expect. I particularly like the fact that the author included the music notation at the end of the book, for a play-along/sing-along.

5.0 out of 5 stars A NEW SLANT ON AN OLD FAVORITE., May 7, 2007
This review is from: Froggie Went A-Courtin' (Paperback)
As a child, many a many a year ago, this was one of the first folk song I learned. I must admit when I read this one to the kids in class, I at first had some gualms. For a start, it did break tradition, and did not go along with the old, old song I had learned well over fifty years ago. Secondly, at first reading I felt that the primary lesson of the book was that to each his own and stick with your own kind, etc. After giving the book a reread, I changed my mind. I feel it is just a cute story about a frog who want to be in love and wants a wife. The lesson that you had better find someone compatable to marry is a valid lesson and one I certainly not fuss about. The illustrations are well executed and actually quite good and match the story line, which is also quite good, quite well. All in all, I have to give this one five stars. I do have to agree with a previous reviewer who pointed out that this is NOT the old, original version of this song and the buyer needs to be aware of that. Overall, recommend highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Based on the traditional, merry song of the same name, October 12, 2002
Froggie Went A-courtin' is a thoroughly delightful and highly recommended children's picture book by Iza Trapani and based on the traditional, merry song of the same name. Warm and jubilant color illustrations by Trapani bring to life this simple and enjoyable tale about a frog searching for someone to be his wife, until a lady frog comes to him. The final page presents a simple, sheet music rendition of the popular ditty for budding musicians.
