Book Description

It's time for bed! Not if Froggy has his way! Even after a long day of playing, Froggy's still not tired. His bath is ready, but first Froggy has to find his boat. And where are his pajamas? And how did his toothbrush get into the cookie jar? Oh, Frrooggyy! Now it's time to go to sleep, right? But Froggy can't sleep without a bedtime story! Join Froggy as he hops, flops, and zips from one familiar bedtime ritual to another.

Illustrated by Frank Remkiewicz

"Froggy's stalling tactics will delight any child who has ever begged to stay up just a few more minutes." (School Library Journal)

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Even when Froggy goes to bed, it's a high-action adventure. If you've seen him learn to swim, go to school, bake a cake, get dressed for winter, or play soccer, you know that in Froggy's world nothing is ever easy or efficient, and that everything has its own set of goofy sound effects. This is precisely why preschoolers can't resist these delightful read-aloud picture books! Despite the fact that Froggy is "too pooped to pop," he is not at all tired when it's time for bed. (Sound familiar?) He has to find his boat before he can take a bubble bath, and goes looking for his pajamas, his toothbrush (it is not in the fishbowl or the wastebasket, but in the cookie jar), his huggy, and a bowl of flies for a snack. A couple of glasses of water (oops) and a bedtime story later, his mother is fast asleep: "'Good night, Mom,' said Froggy. Then he closed his eyes and went to sleep--zzzzzzzzzz." Parents and children alike will welcome this addition to Jonathan London and illustrator Frank Remkiewicz's Froggy series. (Ages 2 to 6) --Karin Snelson --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-Froggy's stalling tactics will delight any child who has ever begged to stay up just a few more minutes. When his mother announces that it is bedtime, the frog's familiar response is, "No! I'm not tired." He goes through all the usual bedtime rituals of taking a bath, putting on his pajamas, brushing his teeth, and finding his huggy (a human rag doll), all of which are hidden in the most unlikely places. Before he goes to sleep, he snacks on a bowl of flies, which makes him thirsty for a drink, which he spills. Exhausted, his mother tells him to go to sleep, but he begs for a story. Predictably, she falls asleep reading to him. The tireless amphibian gives her a hug, and finally goes to sleep, too. Sounds like "flop flop flop," "splash splash splash," and "Munch scrunch munch" will encourage children's participation, and youngsters will giggle at all the silly places Froggy searches for the things he needs before bed. Remkiewicz's bold, funny cartoons vary from several small pictures on a white background to full-spread paintings. The art echoes the text and will appeal to children. A great bedtime story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Froggy's Back...Lucky Us, September 19, 2000
This review is from: Froggy Goes to Bed (Hardcover)
It's the end of the day and Froggy is "too pooped to pop". But that doesn't stop him from prolonging his bedtime. He has to find his boat before his bubble bath, and then his pajamas, his toothbrush and his huggy. And before his mother can get him tucked in he needs a snack and a drink, the closet door has to be closed, the bedroom door opened just right and his nightlight turned to low. Poor mother frog is getting pretty tired herself, but Froggy insists on a story. As mother begins to read, she drops off to sleep and begins to snore. Only then does Froggy close his eyes and fall soundly asleep. Jonathan London has written a gentle, funny story of bedtime delayed, full of wonderful, expressive illustrations and silly sound effects, that will delight and amuse all pre-schoolers. And as they watch Froggy's staying-up antics, many will recognize a little of themselves in the story. This is a book that is sure to become a bedtime favorite and a nice addition to all of London's Froggy stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars I HAD VERY MIXED EMOTIONS ABOUT THIS ONE, September 16, 2006
This review is from: Froggy Goes to Bed (Mass Market Paperback)
The simple illustrations are nice and the text is quite readable. But...I am not at all sure I would want the kids reading this one on their own without discussion. The little froggy is indeed a typical kid with typical kid reactions. I found that be best use for this book was to discuss with the children just what it was the frog was doing and why it was so wrong and what some of the ramifications might be for his actions. As an example, I use the tooth brushing battle as a way of explaining just what could happen to teeth that were not brushed properly. All in all this was a okay book but the parent or teacher needs to monitor and discuss each situation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Teachable Moment, March 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Froggy Goes to Bed (Hardcover)
We love Froggy books. We have them all. However, I was surprised to see Froggy "back-talking" his mother and telling her what needed to be done before he'd actually go to sleep. Since we already had the book, I chose to use this to teach my daughter that Froggy is wrong to talk back to his mother. We talked about how long it was taking Froggy and how this was respecting his mother when she told him to go to sleep. Ok book but lessons are endless.
