Let me say first that I am a fan of the Froggy series. I have several titles in my second grade classroom, and "Froggy Plays T-Ball" has long been a favorite of my four-year-old. We were looking forward to reading this one together.

I was very disappointed at some of the behaviors of characters in this story. When the new babysitter complains that her cell phone is dead, Froggy asks if she has a boyfriend and sings, "Sandy and Danny, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!" Is that really necessary? I don't want my children - or my students - chanting that song.

Later, after Froggy tracks mud all over the carpet, he covers it up with a rug before his parents arrive. Not only do the babysitter and Froggy neglect to tell the parents about the mud, but the babysitter takes credit for keeping the house clean! I'd have preferred to see them take some responsibility for their actions.

Strangely, on the last page, when the parents offer future babysitting opportunities to the babysitter, she says she's moving to Australia. ???

I enjoy other books in this series, but be warned that this particular one may promote behaviors you don't want your young readers to copy!

Yes indeed, Froggy makes a mess, causes trouble and does a lot of unbecoming things that even good children do or think to do when they think they can get away with it. I certainly do not condone Froggy's behavior but you see the babysitter cleaning, struggling exhausted and angry--not just Froggy having fun. It is kind of funny because my son who is 5 and does know what is good and bad behavior is really more horrified about what Froggy does than anyone. We discuss what would happen if he was that bad with a babysitter (not that we ever had one) and how terrible he made her feel.

I guess I am a believer that while we should try to shelter our children from as much bad as possible in the world, there are real life children in the playground that act like Froggy and discussing what is good and bad whether it is with a cartoon frog or a real life incident is necessary. Sitting with your child reading a book is a good time to bring right/wrong to light.

In fairness I am not sure I would be as comfortable reading this to a three year old who does not have the moral foundations to understand what Froggy does is wrong.

My daughter just borrowed this book from her school library. She's 5 1/2. She must have liked the cover and illustration to borrow it. After we read it though she didn't like it as much. She said it was "kind of boring" because it was just about babysitting and they didn't do anything exciting. She also didn't like that Froggy kept doing not nice things and the babysitter didn't seem that nice either. This is her review.

My granddaughter loves this series! First I read the books to her, and, now, that she is in second grade, she reads most of each book to me! Both the illustrations and the text are perfect for children ages 4-7/

Terrible book! We had to get rid of this. It was teaching our children how to be bad for the babysitter. I would like a complete opposite type of book for my children!

More About the Author

I was raised a Navy Brat and moved every two or three years when I was growing up. Now I live in one place and travel to lots of other places. I started writing poems in college, got a M.A. in History, performed in a modern dance company, traveled the world, got married, had two sons, and when I started telling my boys, Aaron and Sean, stories I realized that I could write for children. My first two books came out in the same week, in 1992, THIRTEEN MOONS ON TURTLE'S BACK and THE LION WHO HAD ASTHMA, soon followed by FROGGY GETS DRESSED. These books are still in print. FROGGY GETS DRESSED was the first of over twenty Froggy books. The most recent one is FROGGY GOES TO HAWAII. In October 2011 FROGGY BUILDS A TREE HOUSE will be published. The next one will be FROGGY GOES TO HAWAII. My Froggy books are silly and little kids like them. But I also write other kinds of books, including wildlife books. My first wildlife book was THE EYES OF GRAY WOLF. Most recent one is LITTLE SWAN. In October 2011 LITTLE PENGUIN: THE EMPEROR OF ANTARCTICA will come out. I've published around 100 books since 1992, but now I only write poems for myself. My sons and my wife, Maureen, are my constant inspirations. But I'm also inspired by young children, dogs, mountains, rivers, stars, trees, great cities, deserts, jungles, great food, dance, art, some sports, and the moon. And if anybody asks, Froggy c'est moi--but he's also Aaron and Sean, and every kid I've ever met. Flop flop flop!
