When I was growing up in Iowa, my parents always had the radio on to the local station. Through this medium I was exposed to nearly all the names of the counties, cities and towns in Iowa. This book gives a great deal more substance to those names, as it is a series of explanations of the origins of the names.
This is a book that is a definitive example of one meant for browsing, the kind where you read a few pages and say to anyone within earshot, "Did you know that *** was named for ****?" It will of course be very helpful if the other person is someone that would be interested in learning about the origins of the names of places in Iowa. Otherwise, the wonder that you are expressing may be completely lost on them. In any case, if you do have an interest in how the places in Iowa were named, then this is the book for you. As a lifelong resident of Iowa, I found it delightful.
