5.0 out of 5 stars The Only Info I could find on a Huge Mystery! March 9, 2011

As a testimonial states from the forward: "The kind of book I only wished I had in hand when I was twelve..." No truer words could be written about this very impressive volume. Mr. Handley shows attention to detail on what at times can be a very confusing and contradictory subject. No effort has been spared to bring to the surface every aspect of franchise lore and legend. The mind-blowing illustrations by Mr. Carbajal only put paid to this wonderful work of a favorite film franchise beloved by millions since it's debut forty-three years ago. As I wrote in the title of the review, From Aldo to Zira: Lexicon of the Planet of the Apes, answered part of a question I had about a little known chapter of the franchise, namely the 'apesolutely' fantastic short film: Salvation for the Planet of the Apes, made in 1976, by Orange County, California photographer and filmmaker Vern Dietsche Jr. Salvation was until I read this book, was a mystery. Now with reading the book, I've been invigorated to do my own research into the 'forgotten' apes film until this mystery is solved. If you are a fan of the franchise or a fan of science-fiction will appreciate the text, the information, the illustrations, photos and layout of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book for an Apes fan! December 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
First, I've been a Planet of the Apes fan since I was a kid. I had the original bubblegum cards from the 68 classic (never a complete set through - drats!) and when I graduated from Junior High, celebrated by going to a Go Ape festival where a freind and I sat through all Five films! Rich's book is a perfect gift for any apes fan. It answers every question with clear, precise information about everything, Movies, TV, Comics (domestic and Foreign) even unpublished or yet to be published books. It's simply brilliant. Filled with images from the various media and information as to where to find stuff like scripts and such, it's an invaluable source book. I'd put it up there with the Star Wars and Star Trek Encyclopedias. I cannot praise this book enough. It is simply brilliant and long past due!

Rich Handley's FROM ALDO TO ZIRA is what its subtitle says it is: "A Comprehensive Encyclopedia," and if this is indeed a first volume only, I can only say: Godspeed Volume 2! Handley's intensive knowledge of his chosen subject--the complete span of the APES mythos, including all its detours, dead ends, eddies, and open vistas--is shared with enthusiasm, wit, and relentless attention to detail. If the minutea of POTA and its offshoots is your own obsession, rest assured Handley shares it. If a one-stop reference guide to acquainting yourself with the APES universe is your need, FROM ALDO TO ZIRA is the best book on the market. Handley makes it all accessible to both the amateur entry-level reader/researcher and the lifelong obsessive, and I can imagine no higher purpose or scope for a book such as this. Highly recommended!
