Book Description

“I saw the dead king…burn,” Raphere whispered to the voices. She lifted her chin. “Why would I see such a thing, if not to prevent it?”

“There are many kings in the land, and all kings die eventually. You are more important than any.”

Did they think to keep her here, forever? In the Pikestan? But she was not safe. And she could do nothing for anyone. But as a wanderer…
---------

Ever since spilling her blood before the Teller of Destiny, Raphere has spent her life trying to prove she is not like her mother, a dark sorceress. And though she yearns to be, she is not a white wanderer either. She is the Jivasivar, the first grey soul born into the land since sin and the Changing. Some call her savior; others, assassin. One thing is clear: everyone has a plan for Raphere. Few seem to care about what is best for her--only what she might gain or cost them.

To the visitors in the Pikestan, she is a target for their cruelty. To the voices of the weald, she is a precious angel and a last chance at life. To the Dark Lord Verisa, she is a spoiled girl and an unwanted burden. To the mercenary Rant Pae, she is a comely maiden and a promised bounty. To the Highland witch Rumara, she is a puzzle to decipher from afar. To the Teller of Destiny, which revealed the grey of Raphere's soul, she is the Great All's long awaited Sword and Shield. Amidst such judgment, can a young woman with young girl's dreams choose her own path correctly?

Searching for her purpose Raphere embarks upon a journey to find the white wanderer Tranquia and the Jivan Tome--the Divine Poem which promised Raphere's emergence, centuries ago. She must discern friend from foe as all strive to manipulate her for their own designs. Does she have the conviction to be the Jivasivar or is she merely a pawn in a fight for the survival of both ancients and kings? With the Jivan Tome out of reach, and her destiny as clouded as her grey blood, will she bend to the manipulations of others and take a path that leads to the destruction of all?

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-constructed Dark Fantasy January 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It is surprising how very few novels claim to be dark fantasy but fail to execute on the basic mechanic of instilling the sense that everything is precariously balanced, and that if but one thing were to go the wrong way, the protagonist will make the wrong choice and fall to evil. In most novels there is never really any danger that the protagonist chooses poorly; we know that in the end they'll choose the side of good and evil will be vanquished. Maintaining that possibility is perhaps the most important thing a novel like this can do, and that it succeeds so well in this aspect, all other aspects fall into place. The only flaws I can see are a little too long of time spent on the protagonist's departure from the initial setting and the bland title and cover art which do little to sell the more fantastical and darker elements of the novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative and intelligent. Recommended! June 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
From Continue is what I'd call a classic fantasy with romantic elements--and one of the best I've read in years.

While the storyline is complex, you don't realize it until much later due to the engaging literary style and execution of the plot/subplots. There's a lot going on, all of it very interesting and imaginative, and laced with a medieval feel, that stimulates the senses. It's a "Take me away to another world and delight me with every moment" kind of book.

Characterization is well thought out and robust, each one. The main character, Raphere, is relatable and especially endearing, from her strengths to her quirks.

I'd like to mention that although some titles in a similar genre might appeal to a particular gender, From Continue strikes me as one that would appeal to both female and male readers. Creative and intelligent, it's a read I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh take on fantasy May 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Raphere isn't a damsel in distress. She is a girl mistreated by her mother who happens to be a powerful witch. Her mother works the dark arts and when her friends come around, it's not just the mother that torments Raphere. This has led Raphere from early childhood to run into the forest. This is how she found Continue and the spirits that talk to her.

As Raphere turns into a woman she has found the eye of some of the dark and cruel men who come around during the celebrations at her mother's home. One man who seems different is a mercenary, Rant Pae. She finds herself at odds with him. She knows not what it is that attracts her to him, but at the same time warns her away.

This book has so much imagination to it. The woods are an enchanted area that anyone with an active imagination as a child will appreciate. At first I couldn't connect with Raphere. She was letting her mother walk all over her and then Rant Pae came into the book. I was hooked from their connection. It was strong, but you wondered just what the connection was. This book doesn't give everything away quickly and I love that about it. It is a good sized book and excellent read.

I received a copy of this book for my honest review.
