"From The Crack House To The White House" by Denise Stokes, may be an autobiography, yet it reads like a novel. As she describes her life and its downward spiral that begins with her victimization, we begin to see pasterns that give us the readers a sense of her anguish and despair as never ending. Just as we begin to believe its going to keep getting worse, as addiction and HIV take their toll, a miracle happens. The dramatic changes shows us a "new" woman, eager reach for and achieve goals and explore talents and gifts. Its great reading for teens and those who may find daunting challenges facing them in life with inspiration and hope that anything is possible if we earnestly try, believe and not give up. The book is fast paced and compels the reader to keep reading as the chapters pass. Please note this book is adult in context and has some graphic descriptions that may not be appropriate for preteens and younger that have adult reading skills.

Denise Stokes is an inspiration to all who meet her. I interviewed her a number of years ago while writing my own book, "Many Blessings: A Tapestry of Accomplished African American Women." She was graceful, articulate and willing to reveal her own story of triumph over tragedy and marginalization. What a woman! What a story! Read this book and you will be inspired by her process and progress, overcoming the challenges of trauma to become a beacon of hope for women, people suffering with addiction, and those infected with HIV. Nicely done, Denise! From the Crack House to the White House: Turning Obstacles Into Opportunities

From the Crack House to the White House: Turning Obstacles Into OpportunitiesI could not put the book down from the moment I picked it up. I cried, I laughed, and I shared the joys with Denise as she shared her journey with me. I wish everyone would read this book and share it with anyone who has HIV/AIDS or needs to be in recovery or is in recovery. This is a must read for family members, the community, educators, and so many people. This book just means so much to me and I just want everyone that has anyone with any of the issues that Denise shared to give this book, share this book with them. I am passing my book on, and encouraging it to be passed on and on. I am buying other copies and passing it on. This book is a must read. Thank you Denise for sharing your life with me and with our society. Stephanie M.
