Editorial Reviews

In 2005, AVIAN released their debut album, From The Depths of Time to both fan and critical acclaim. The lineup featured vocalist Lance King known for his work with PYRAMAZE and BALANCE OF POWER, and a very special guest appearance by legendary bassist David Ellefson of MEGADETH fame who played bass on the album. Additional credits include mastering by Tommy Hansen best known for his work with HELLOWEEN and breathtaking artwork created by Mattias Noren. From The Depths Of Time has been out of print for a while and is now being reissued with 3 previously unreleased tracks via the band's new label, Blinding Force Recordings: 1) Sentinel On The Horizon 2) Two Sides Collide 3) As The World Burns (Live Acoustic Version) Sentinel On The Horizon features vocals by Brian Hollenbeck who takes over the reigns from the departed Lance King. Two Sides Collide was previously only available on the Japanese version of the album. The total run time is over 68 minutes and contains 16 tracks as well as 16 pages of phenomenal artwork created by Mattias Noren.

I look forward to enjoying future projects from this band and seeing them on tour (must come to Phoenix!).

From the Depths of Time has creative production values as well, giving the album a raw, spacey sound.

AVIAN plays exactly the kind of progressive power metal that I enjoy. They keep the time changes to a minimum and the guitars with a consistent crunch. Two of my favorite progressive albums of the last few years have been BALANCE OF POWER's Heathen Machine (which was thier first without King on vocals) and MAGNITUDE 9's Decoding the Soul (which featured new BALANCE OF POWER and SECTION 16 singer Corey Brown) and From the Depths of Time matches up very favorably to both of them. They keep the sound full because of the excellent work of the rhythm section of Ellefson, drummer David Small and keyboardist Jonah Weingarten (PYRAMAZE). Their efforts are a pleasant wave that washes across Leviathan's riffs in a wonderful mix. Guitar solos are handled fantastically by Roger Moore in keeping with progressive virtuosos like Rob Johnson and John Petrucci. All this is so well done in fact that at times they almost drown out the awesome voice of Lance King. He seems a little dialed back in the mix, nowhere near as dynamic as he sounded on say, Perfect Balance. That would be my only complaint actually, this man can seriously soar when unleashed and I was hoping to hear some of that here.

There are simply no bad songs on this album. There is also no real ballads, which is a nice touch. Instead they change the pacing of the tracks throughout the album and keep the album flowing smoothly. The album is almost an hour long, but it goes down so smooth that it is over before you know it. I have spun this CD constantly since it arrived and it just keeps getting better. Like most great progressive albums you will keep discovering different nuances each time you listen to it.

This is truly an amazing CD. The track As the World Burns is a must listen and a great song to kick off this solid album. The solo work on Black Masaquerade is air guitar worthy. City of Peace and Time is All We Need really showcase the brilliant song writing of Yan Leviathan. This is an album that will be timeless and is one the best debut efforts I have ever heard. I look forward to enjoying future projects from this band and seeing them on tour (must come to Phoenix!). Keep up the great work!

First off, I want to express how much I love the artwork of Avian's debut CD entitled, From the Depths of Time! It truly is some of the coolest I've seen since Iron Maiden's, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son!

Secondly, the music is as great as the front artwork! 2005 proved how how of a worker and capable that Lance King really is. He owns Nightmare Records and distribution, as well as singing lead in several differnt progressive/power metal bands located throughout the world! If that's not good enough, he still takes the time to communicate regularly and shows appreciation toward his fans!

One of his latest projects, Avian, proves that the hard work doesn't stop now! From the Depths of Time offers up melodies, fantastic guitar playing, excellent lead vocals, and even a veteran superstar playing bass guitar, Dave Effelson, ex-Megadeth! From the Depths of Time has creative production values as well, giving the album a raw, spacey sound. The entire package from the artwork, musicianship, and production makes for what is predicted to be one of the strongest progressive/power metal release of this year!

If you enjoy bands such as: Balance of Power, Pyramaze, TNT, and Dream Theater, you're sure to enjoy Avian's, From the Depths of Time.

OH MAN!!!!!! There is really no way to describe this CD. When i first heard that LANCE KING was doing the vocals i had to have it. ONCE i got it I couldn't stop playing it. This is one heck of a cd, Power, Progressive Old School my type of music. The vocals of LANCE KING once again prove to the metal worl he is the best metal singer out there. He sing with passion, and from his heart, he puts every ounce of his being into every song. LANCE YOU RULE my friend. Dave Elfeson from MEGADEATH plays bass and drives the rythm section of this band. Then there is YAN, YAN my friend YOU RULE. And newcomer Jonah Weintgarden on keyboards, he is also the keyboardist for PYRAMAZE and LILITU, and he is awesome. Is this a CD i recommend? YOU BET IT IS. Go out and buy it today and you won't be disappointed. IT IS AWESOME. Also check out PYRAMAZE and ASCENSION THEORY, MANTICORA, SHINING STAR, and WARMACHINE.

Avian features the vocals of Lance King, one of the premier power metal vocalists of our time. I first became aware of the vocals of this King in his band Pyramaze--or was it in one of his other bands, namely Shining Star? No matter: all three of these are fantastic metal bands. Avian may be the heaviest of the three, however--Pyramaze would then be a close second--and the Avian debut album, "From the Depths of Time," is too good to be a debut, but a veteran vocalist in King and a veteran bass guitarist formerly of Megadeth help account for the superb quality of this release. As a guy who loves the sound of Primal Fear, Judas Priest and HammerFall, I say that Avian holds their own. Buy this CD and enjoy--and not just the music itself but also the positive lyrical content, a true rarity in the world of power metal.
