Format: Audio CD
On the back on this CD there is a notice which tells us that every measure has been taken to reduce the surface noise on these 78rpm disc recordings, including the use of something called CEDAR, which is a technology I'm not familiar with, but the result of which is a tinny, watery noise similar to that caused by GOLDWAVE or similar noise-removing programs, and also makes the whole recording sound like it's in a fish bowl. Pretty much the whole CD sounds like this, some worse than others. It's bad enough that people take in into their own hands to "remaster" their home-transfers before uploading them online, but for an actual record company to beat the sound to death and charge money for it is something I find distressing. I wouldn't have wasted my money after listening to the samples, but I like Ella, and this is a reasonable price for the amount of material, such as it is, so I had to be sure. (You sure can't hear any grinding disc noise, that's to be sure!)

The music on the CD I like well enough. Ella was an upbeat singer with plenty of charm and ability to carry off hot jazz numbers, which is mostly what we get here. There's also a couple songs from Finian's Rainbow, which Ella starred in on Broadway, a couple questionable duets with Hoagy Carmichael, and a couple of her Scottish music-hally hokum pieces, so there's quite a bit of variety. There is minimal overlap with the more recently released disc from Retrieval Records... however, listening online, some of the tracks on their release also sound like they were "GOLDWAVED"!! (I also heard this noise on another Retrieval release, a 2-disc set of Cliff Edwards.) So be careful, the plague is spreading farther than just the Internet Archive.
