Editorial Reviews

John Fullbright s debut studio recording From the Ground Up is slated to hit stores on May 8th on CD and LP. Working off the success of his debut live recording, Live at the Blue Door, Fullbright has been gathering a strong fan base, one fan at a time through consistent touring throughout Texas and Oklahoma and a live show that continues to develop and strengthen each time he steps onto the stage. His virtuosic abilities on both the piano and guitar, combined with timeless lyric throughout From the Ground Up certainly sets Fullbright apart from his many comtemporaries both young and old. From the spiritually influenced Gawd Above and Satan and St. Paul to the poignantly satirical Fat Man John Fullbright is making his initial mark as a truly gifted writer, singer, player and performer-all before the age of 25.

I work in radio - one of the reasons I still love it is that I still, even after all these years of listening to music, STILL come across new stuff, fresh new releases that blow me away. Right now, it's the music made by this young guy out of Oklahoma, John Fullbright. He writes some great songs, and his delivery is just plain real. The music is rooted in folk, some label it "Americana", but like the best music it confounds any label immediately after it's applied. I could compare John Fullbright to a lot of people to try to give you some reference points, but I feel like that does him a disservice - as soon as you think, "Oh, he's like (fill in the blank)," suddenly, he's not.

Got this one a little early - a week or so ago, I put this album on driving around, driving to work, driving home - the CD player conveniently starts over with #1 - and I've played the first track from the album "Gawd Above" on the air a couple of times. Wanted to be sure to spread the word when the album came out, and it did yesterday. Music doesn't hit me good and strong this often, so when it does, I've gotta share the good news!

I recently saw John Fullbright at a COMMUNION show with 5 other bands (one of which was a solo set by Jackie Greene). John was the best music of the night in a night of great music; my friend and I couldn't stop telling each other how much we loved him. This album is fantastic! If you like this one, also check out "Live at the Blue Door". I see live music several times a month and have found a few new (to me) artists in the past couple of months that I really like, but this guy tops them all. I'm looking forward to hearing more great stuff from him in the future.

For a young artist with a first studio release, this is an astonishing album. All the more so when you see that he plays most of the instruments and is 50% credited for production of the album. I was hooked on the first hearing. Beautiful vocals with a wide range emotions. Clever and sophisticated songs that require several listens before you really "get it". Great arrangements. I am still tingling when that Hammond-sounding organ comes in strong and gentle. And excellent guitar. The other thing that I love about these songs is their range. You can hear his nfluences - which are wide and diverse - but he never imitates. Like all great artists, he has taken from his favorite masters, and created some thing new and wonderful. I have just bought a couple of extra copies to give to my friends.

'I made the heaven and earth
I made the stars above
Is it too much to ask for a little love'
Gawd Above

One listen to the voice of John Fullbright is enough to garner your attention, so you listen for more songs and more sounds. I have read that he is compared to Dylan, Tom Waits, Leon Russell and Randy Newman. Every song on this CD, 'From the Ground Up' gives us a different sound, a little change, a lilt here and there, but there is no mistaking the talent. The songs and the voice draws us in, and then we want to hear more, know more, understand what the lyrics mean. "[My family] had a little farm, about 80 acres -- that's where I live now. The little farmhouse that I was raised in until I was about 9, that's where the title for the CD came from," Fullbright says. "Every song on this record was written in that house, and I was kind of written in that house." NPR

John Fullbright's voice sounds like it comes from an old soul at times, and then you see his fresh face, that of a 25 year old. There is a sincere sureness to his voice, it draws us in and we listen closely to the lyrics and the melody. With the use of an acoustic guitar and a piano, he sets a mood and we follow it.

There are 12 songs on this CD, and everyone of these tunes is as good as the next one. I keep thinking this one is my favorite until I hear the next one. 'Daydreamer', 'Forgotten Flowers', 'Song For a Child', 'Gawd Above' , and 'Jericho' are the ones I listen to over as over. 'Me Wanting You' brings me the haunting sounds. 'Fat Man' brings the lilting sounds, the beat that goes on. All the tunes are winners, and John Fullbright with this CD is up for a Grammy.

I first heard John Fullbright on "A Prairie Home Companion" on Sept. 29, 2012, performing his song, "Satan & St. Paul", he just literally punched me between the eyes with his talent, his voice and over-all sound I fell in love with his music instantly and have listened to him also on his website. He's a dynamite musician, no wonder he was nominated for a Grammy, (and opposite Bonnie Raitt!). He's on a level with my other most favorite singer/songwriters, Jackson Browne, Neil Young and Leonard Cohen. Excellent poetic style, with a wide range of genre, from folk to blues to gospel/country.

I've been seeing John in concert since 2009, about when he released his first album, a very simple live effort at a club in Oklahoma City. A few of the songs from that album -- "I've Got All the Time in the World," "Moving," "Jericho," and "Satan and St. Paul"-- made this album, his first studio album, and I think what should be considered his debut album. I'm a songwriter myself, the same age as John. Every time I get the opportunity to hear him, I'm more totally blown away, and it befuddles me, because I just don't understand what he's done to get that good. But he is. This album was nominated for the 2013 Grammy for Best Americana Album, against the likes of Mumford and Sons, the Avett Brothers, the Lumineers, and Bonnie Raitt. I haven't heard the Bonnie Raitt album, but John's album, despite being overwhelmingly the least known of the nominees, is universes better than the other three. He won't win for that reason, but his time will come, and it's coming quick.

The lyrical depth is astonishing. John likes Biblical language a lot - from the first track, "Gawd Above," "Jericho," "I Only Pray at Night," "I've Got All the Time in the World," "Satan and St. Paul" - it's all over this album, and he pulls it all off with sincerity and humanity. John isn't a particularly religious person, which gives the religious imagery a pointed irony to a lot of it and a thoroughly humanistic depth that escapes many, many writers. The arrangements are fantastic - you can find Americana, Blues, Southern Rock, Folk, Singer-Songwriter all on the same album. He sings with a drawl, yet it's so polished that you know that he approaches his art with the utmost musicianship.

That this is his first studio album should give everyone chills at what this guy's going to end up producing.
