Having been a student at UGA when Larry was hired, the poignancy with which this book was written verbally transported me to those days and brought back many fond memories. Tony Barnhart's journalistic capabilities are legend adding structure and emphasis to Larry's life story. Both the words and accompanying CD of Larry's greatest calls recreate the original excitement of the event but also brings tears to one's eyes at the realization that Larry's era has ended.

From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot is a fine biography recommended for any library strong in college football memoirs. It pulls no punches in assessing the inside story of a broadcaster and his fans, analyzing the 'voice' of Georgia football experience and charting Munson's rise to fame. An audio CD of Munson's 10 greatest calls is included in this fine survey.

Many people know about "Larry Munson, Voice of the Georgia Bulldogs." In this book, Tony Barnhart gets out the full story, about Larry growing up in Minnesota, going off to war, coming back and going to broadcasting school, then truly launching his career in Nashville as voice of the Nashville Vols baseball team in the Southern League along with Vanderbilt football and basketball until Georgia came calling (with the move of the Braves from Milwaukee to Atlanta) for his services in 1966. Larry's personality shines through, and some of his great calls are included on a CD. This package adds up to a most enjoyable multi-media experience.
