I've used this book during Advent for the past four years. Even though the meditations are familiar, now, each year I find something new. Good meditations should be like this! I like the fact that, unlike Advent calendars, the book does not brake to a stop on Christmas, but takes the reader walking with Father Holtz for an additional week, through the octave of Christmas. One of the meditations, in fact, deals with people who end the Christmas celebration too early! The meditations are long enough to be worth reading, but not too long, perfect for a morning or evening devotional. I wish that Father Holtz's book of Lenten meditations would become available on Kindle!

Anne's husband, Tom, here!

I really enjoyed walking through the author's home city as he makes daily stops to contemplate many of the symbols and traditions we often just hurry by during the holidays. Who would have thought that Christmas trees, the festive banners on street lights or even gift wrap could refocus us on the great Gift that God the Father has given for us? But Fr. Albert does just that - he keeps redirecting our eyes from the materialism and the mayhem, back to the manger and majesty of the Incarnation. Definitely worth getting. If you have doubts, I believe you can sample it on your kindle.

The one caveat I need to share is the edition I got (I got the print edition) had a fairly major, one-page printing mishap: the middle chunk of the chapter on Christmas trees (p. 39) was missing (actually, they accidentally put p. 41 in place of p. 39). That is one negative in an otherwise delightful new perspective on Advent. I would imagine, however, that later printings have fixed this and/or that the Kindle Edition avoids the issue altogether.

Brother Albert Holtz' book, "From Holidays to Holy Days" provides daily inspiration during Advent while appreciating the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations. His favorite quote about Advent: "a long, loving look at the real," is made literal with his walking tours through Newark during the Christmas season. The sights are specific to Newark but target the signs of the season that exist everwhere. One can wrap gifts, send cards, and decorate a tree while tying the activity in with a spiritual viewpoint. Brother Holtz does not preach; instead he reflects our own thoughts and questions and guides us to sources that have shaped Christian theology,as well as the Benedictine way of life. I'll definitely keep this book on my Kindle and read it every year.

This is a nice book of reflections, based around everyday sights and events that the author comes across during his daily walks around his neighborhood. It is rooted in Benedictine spirituality, which is not surprising since the author is a Benedictine monk. It is written for a contemporary "lay" Christian - it is definitely Catholic in outlook, but I think it would be appreciated by non-Catholics as well, particularly mainline Protestants. Definitely not academic - not a lot of formal theology or philosophy or really deep thoughts, like you might get from a Jesuit or Dominican. Instead he reflects on aspects of "the holidays", both religious and secular, as a way to get closer to God. So for example he might see a plastic Santa Claus decoration on someone's lawn, or a family getting out of their car to visit grandma, or the recent grads from his high school getting together for a holiday reunion, and use these things to reflect on God, and the themes of Advent and Christmas. What I like is that it's all positive. He doesn't see Santa Claus or frantic holiday shoppers and bemoan the secularization of Christmas; instead he looks for ways to find Christ in these things.

In terms of a time committment - it takes maybe 10-15 minutes to read and think about the reflection each day. Good for busy people. He includes some questions for further pondering, which I found as an individual not very thought provoking, but maybe would be better in a group setting.

This book is a wonderful meditation on the days of Advent, taking a look a the secular themes and transforming them into wonderful reflectinos on the true meaning of the Advent and Christmas seasons. A perfect book for a daily reflection time during what is all too often a much too hectic time of year for many.

Albert Holtz has a great way of combining every day encouners with scripture and the Benedictine Rule. We use both his Lenten book and now the Advent book. Both serve a study group well and assist in giving voice to situations of which most of us are a part.

Wonderful and insightful daily readings. I found I looked at my daily interactions in a new way. I was able to travel through advent in a more peaceful way. Will read it again next year but also take something away from the readings post-Christmas.
